brown period

So when i first started my period it was pretty normally colored but irrregular, then about two years later i started getting a brown discharge that would last the whole month or just for part of it, then i started taking birth control and the month long brown stuff stopped but now my periods are just brown with clots. I really would prefer not to go to a doctor, does anyone know what is going on?

that use to happen to me a lot and sometimes still does but I did a lot of research on it about a year ago and it pretty much said that it's brown because it's taking longer than normal to flush out of your system so it's drying out before you can see it red, causing the red to turn brown. I'd get it a week before my period and a week after. I just keep a warm cloth when I see it like that on my lower ab and the heat helps with the natural flow.... now mine is pretty much back to normal =)
