There is more to the menstrual "cycle" than just having a period. It is is the whole shebang ... starts with the menstrual flow, then includes ovulation at the middle of the month, then ends with the new menstrual period starting up. You can't be pregnant without ovulating (producing an egg), which happens in the middle of the menstrual cycle. However, you CAN be pregnant without having a period. If you produce an egg, you can get pregnant, whether you have a period (shed the uterus lining) or not.
