diverticulitis

could you tell me the foods I should avoid to prevent severe bouts of diverticulitis? I am 64 yrs. old., female, and have arteriosclerosis heart disease, and in the past yr. have been having flareups of diverticulitis so bad I miss work and have to stay in bed for a wk. I have a dr., and am on antibiotics, and am scheduled for a ct scan, but no one has told me what foods to avoid. when I am having a flareup I am afraid to eat anything.
I have to watch my diet because of heart, and I am confused abt. what to eat and to avoid so I won,t have anymore flareups of this painful and debilitating diveticulitis. I thought that I should eat roughage to keep my bowels moving, but then I read that during a severe bout the bowels should be kept quiet. Is this true? I just ate an apple and was told that I should eat apple sauce instead. For the past 5 days I have existed on Ensure and gatorade, because I was projectile vomiting and had diarhea at the same time. That has stopped but the pain feels like I have been kicked in the lower part of my stomach and back about 50 times.
Thank you
Chiliqueen P>S. I dont eat chili, so that is not the problem. I work in a chili parlor, that's why my nickname.

the facts are that the above suggestions were the standard recommendations for years until it was found they made no difference. The one thing in the diet that can make a difference for diverticulosis is plenty of fiber, enough that your bowel movements are easy to pass and have some bulk and a bit of moisture. That can be done be eating high fiber foods, or by taking a daily dose of any of several fiber products that are available -- and by drinking enough water daily. People who have recurring bouts of diverticulitis, depending on the severity, need to consider surgery, unless their other medical condition is such that it's too risky. The good news about surgery is that it's usually curative, and has no side effects in terms of digestion or bowel behavior.

don't eat any thing with seeds (cucumbers, yellow squash, pickles etc) I also take a gas ex everyday. It seems to help and I don't get the major pain anymore.
