false positive blood test

by rachael42, Apr 17, 2008 07:22AM
My daughter is 18 yrs old and is currently at Basic Training in the U.S. Army. Some blood work indicated an hcg level of 14, indicating she's pregnant however, she's not pregnant but after 11 blood draws the hcg level still shows she's pregnant and she and I are quite worried that something is wrong. The military doctors there keep telling her that "nothing is wrong" YET the blood work keep showing a steady hcg level of 14. It has not increased in 4 weeks, it just stays at 14. She's having abdominal pain and chest pains (might be stress) but they keep telling her nothing is wrong.  2 weeks ago she was told that she has a lot of acid build and that may be why the hcg levels are high and they gave her some pills (for heartburn) and as of Monday, the hcg levels are still 14. I'm at my wits end because I think she needs to come home, and her drill sergerants literally laughed at me when I broached this to them and stated to me that the Army "ain't like no regular dr's and hospitals" whatever that means. I just want to know if she has cause to be concerned and do I need to contact my Senator to try and get her out.

Quantitative HCG levels of 14 are not diagnostic of pregnacy. Hcg levels repeated over time,  rise in titer if the woman is pregnant. The titer of an unchanging HCG level of 14 would prove  no pregnany. At 80 days past the last menstral period HCG levels would be about 80 if pregnant and at 80 days should be around 8000. You can research this online. Or if you have access to a medical library, there are some good references on quantitative HCG assays. This may save you a phone call to your Senator.
