fibroid surgery

Hi everyone,

I am scheduled to have open abdominal surgery in a couple of weeks to remove a large fibroid. I had been miserable for months and finally when I went to the doctor they found I had a large mass on the outside of my uterus and was anaemic. They explained that often drugs will shrink the fibroid, or they can be removed laparoscopically (sp?) but with the position and size, mine has to be open surgery- a myomectomy. I was given two monthly injections that sent me crashing into menopause at high speed- really felt I wasn't given any warning of howI woulld feel and side effects of the injections. I'm wondering will the op be similar to a hysterectomy? Anyway, I see my doctor once more before surgery and have a list of questions from preop diet to post op medications etc. Has anyone had this experience recently? I was told it would take six weeks to recover- I've never even had one sick day and hate having to take the time off work. I'm so worried that when they go in they will find something else or that it is cancer, even though I know it is so rare. I'm also worried they will have to convert to a hysterectomy, even though my doctor says he has never had to do that.'I'm 34 with no children so really want to avoid that. I was so busy at work before Christmas, and then constantly on the go over Christmas...now I'm obsessing about it and getting really nervous! Any shared experience or tips for recovery, or even questions to ask my doc would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I had myomectomy in feb. I was not given any injection just direct operation scheduled in 15 days. Doc said not to have sex for 5 weeks. Also you can ttc only after 3 months. Recovery was not bad for me. Even my doc said he never did historectomy and he dint for me either so relax. I hope everything goes well for u and both I and U will have our own kids :)
All the best and get well soon
