funky smell and lots of discharge constantly

by mygoodness, Jan 30, 2006 12:00AM
hi i am concerned that something is very wrong with my vagina. first off, i have a smell down there, awful, kindy fishy mixed with onion. also alot of discharge, constantly. the color is somewhat whitish grey. after i use the bathroom you cold still smell it when you go back in. my boyfriend says i taste kind of sour like buttermilk(sorry for details). i had been to the gyno and was told it was bacterial vaginosis and was prescribed antbiotics, oral and vaginal...it seemed to help for a bit but then shortly it started over again, i had repeated the vaginal antibiotics twice and like i said it seemed to help shortly. i also have been having breakouts around my vagina, they hurt and they seem like their bubbles filled with puss, i get them every now and then, i been to th gyno and had tests done several times, but was negative, they said if it was herpes that i had to get tested when i get the breakouts, but i never seemed to get there in time...i also experience pain with sex, not that m boyfriend is very big or anything...i have been experiencing pain for a while now, maybe 2 years....i am very worried and tired at the same time....my sex life is awful..cannot enjoy myself without worrying how i smell or taste and if i begin to relax, that is if i also experience pain so i can't enjoy myself..please, any information would help...i am a young female and this is destroying my relationship and sex life

It does sound like a bacterial or yeast infection.  Have you gone back to the gyno since you took the antibiotics?  Antibiotics can cause yeast infections.  Also your partner needs to be treated.  You could be passing it back and forth.  My husband and I did that for a couple of months before we both took Diflucan (a one day pill to clear yeast infections).

I'm so sorry that you are having such a hard time.  BV is very common, and actually it is not uncommon to have recurrent BV.  There are several things that increase the liklihood of having BV...don't know if you do any of these things but here they are:
--using perfumed soap/bubble baths
--douching
--having an IUD
The reason these things can contribute to BV is because anything that changes the acidity inside of the vagina can cause an increase in the amount of bacteria that normally exists there.
Also, is it possible that your doctor is not being aggressive enough to find a solution for you.  I would definitely consider getting a second opinion.
There is no evidence that BV can be passed from a woman to a man, so I don't think there's a risk that you're passing it back and forth.
Good luck, and I hope someone here can help you.

I just did a study on bv and yeast infections.  While it is more common for yeast infections to be passed back and forth, BV does as well.  It is more commonly transferred in lesbian relationships then from women to man but it does happen.  Typically they won't treat the partner for a first time occurrance of BV but if it comes back, they will.  I hope you don't think I am arguing with you on this or trying to be a know it all.  Just thought I would share my info.

I did a search of several sites, as well, and found no conclusive evidence that BV is transmitted from men to women. I did, however, find that, like you said, it is transmitted in lesbian relationships.  Yeast is definitely spread from partner to partner, but I guess we just used different sources.  Thanks for the reply!

yea i'm 19 and i haven't had sexual intercourse yet. i have a lot of discharge often with a really bad odor...i don't have any other problems just a lot of discharge and an odor... i don't think i need to go to the doctor's for it....but i was wondering if anyone knew of someway of preventing it without medication, perhaps by diet like certain foods, i've heard the live yoghurt is good for yeast infections and thrust, but i was wondering if there was anything else to prevent odors?

I had BV about a year ago. And my husband and i passed it back and forth for about 3 months. Your partner should really be tested. Or you will never get rid of it. I got mine from taking baking soda baths and douching with baking soda water. See I have alot of discharge and a oder problem and I thought these would help. The way my doctor discribed it was everybody has bad acids in their body and good acids. When I used the baking soda so much my bad acids took over and thats how I got the BV. Once my husband was tested and treated aswell I finally got rid of it. I still have alot of discharge, to the point where i go through alot of panty liners, but i doesn't always have an oder. I have also found flushing yourself out while you are in the bathtub helps and vingar and water douche works wonders. Just don't douche alot because it can cause other problems. I hope that this helps.

Hi,  im 17 and for a long time i have had discharge. ever since i was in the 6th grade i started having discharge although it didn't smell and it wasn't a big problem (also the year i started my period). over the years though it has only gotten worse and now it feels like im on my period all the time even though im not, its just the heavy discharge. also, i have to wear a tampon all the time so that it wont completely soak my underwear and also so i wont smell like this tangy discharge smell that it has. its not a fishy odor and theres no itching at all. my discharge is usually clear or white and is very slimy and sometimes it leaves a yellowish color residue in my underwear. i havehad sex . one time i thought i might of had a tampon stuck in there so i felt around and didn't feel anything but when i pulled my fingers out there was this chunky white disharge all over my fingers like there was residue or something on my vaginal walls. and sometimes i get like lower left abdominal pains.
please give my feed back about this. IM REALLY SCARED

Hi, I am 21 now and i never had BV before until about 2  years ago at first i thought that my boyfriend of 6 years gave me an std ..it started out just like a normal discharge for a whole year no bloating, no fevers,no fishy smells until after the year was up me and my boyfriend had sex and it was a really FUNKY smell which scared me because i wasnt used to tht immediatley i went to the doctor about 2 days later jus to see if the smell would go away ,it didnt and it made me feel really uncomfortable i got a pap smear and sure enough the doctor said well u have BV (THT WAS MY FIRST DOCTOR WHICH IS A WOMAN) so she treated me but not my boyfriend and as soon as i would get cured we would have sex and sure enough it was back well i kept getting the infection so i went to another doctor a man this time ..And my boyfriend was with me well this doctor told me well both of u guys need to be treated and do not have sex until u a FULLY cured well we did that oh the medicine was (METRONIDAZOLE i hope i spelled it right) Well its been a year and i havent had the infection since ..Yes ur partner does need to be treated with no sex while taking the meds unless u use a CONDOM..Thanks i hope my information was helpful..: )

If you suffer from BV try to take showers rather than baths. Wash your vagina with warm water and a non perfume no dye soap or just plain warm water and nothing else. I just posted another comment about BV. There are some natural remedies you want to look up 1) boric acid inserted in the vagina (I have a lot women get relief from it) 2) water and hydrogen proxide vaginal wash for 7days. Look it up and do your research to decide if it's something you might want to try. I am going to try number 2 that is my personal preference and hopefully I will get positive results. Good luck and remember there are millions of women going thru the same thing as you including myself :)

I know what "all" of you mean. Every thing you all have, I have. Foul odor, discharge in a variety of colors, painful, red soars on my vaginal area that feel like their filled with puss. And I'm only 14. I first noticed it when I was in 6th grade and here I am going into 9th and still having this problem. For a while I thought it was an HIV/STD, but I didn't want to get tested because of what I might found out. I've tried everything thats not medical related like when washing my vigina (vagina) I used Eve to help prevent odor, but it didn't help. I haven't really done anything to catch and HIV/STD so then I started thinking "What if it's HPV?" But I don't know, but what I do know is I don't want to be a virgin forever but with whatever I have, it looks like thats the way I'm going to remain.

txgal06--have you gone to your doctor? it didn't say that you had in your post.... doctors will prescribe antibiotics or a vaginal cream/insert if you have BV, which it sounds like you do.
