herpies? YEs or NO

hi, is it possible to know that I have herpies (herpes) without going to the doctor? My boyfriend of 2 years-we finally had unprotected sex as we move fwd n2 our relationship to have a child I noticed after sex that I was very irritated and has some discomfort. this is during and really after. I reviewed his penis and there was a scab on the back. I asked him do u have something he said no. I have googled herpies (herpes) and pictures and it doesnt seem to be a large out break how do I know if he really has it or not
