Hi everyone,
About six months ago I went for a regular Pap. And the results came back with abnormal cells on my cervix. The Dr. told me that I had a case of HPV. It kinda freaked me out. I'm only 23 and have never heard of this. I had to go back for more tests. They told me that there are many different types of HPV some with warts and other things and some that cause cervical cancer. I don't have the type with warts but I could have cervical cancer. My dr. told me that HPV is very common in women. I just went yesterday for my six month check up. They told me that alot of times your body fights off the virus within two years and most women don't even know they have it thats whats so scary. There is a vaccine shot called Gardasil. It does not get rid of HPV, but it prevents it if you don't have it and also if you do have HPV its good to get the shots b/c its helps you not to get more types of HPV. So I recommend asking your Dr. about it. They said sooner or later it will be required to have the shots b/c HPV is so common. I start my shots this Friday. Its 3 doses in all. I think you take them within a years period. So I'm praying for all of yall and for my self that my results come back showing no HPV. Good Luck!
Thanks everyone for your responses. You have all eased my worry. All the best in the new year and enjoy the holidays!
Hey i had checked mines because they didn't look like the ones on the internet and I finally went to the doctor and That what what they were!! And the doc told me that the ones with the warts are not the cancer causing so I hope this little bit helped because all the above helped me!!
Thanks
My understanding is that these are two different strands. I had abnormal cells (dysplasia) that lead to a couple of procedures, but I never had warts or anything. Best wishes!
Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess I can rest easy that I probably don't have a higher risk of getting cervical cancer from the form of HPV I have since it causes genital warts. That isn't to say though that i don't have another strain of the hpv virus in addition to the wart causing one. Its best to just get it checked out so i will. Thanks for the information.
That's odd my doc said that strains 6 and 11 (the warts causing ones) are the most high-risk for causing cervical cancer. But I did some research and here's what I found:
http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/cervicalcancer/a/hpvcervcancercn.htm
This page says:
Scientists have discovered over sixty types of the human papillomavirus virus. Visible genital warts occur in only about one percent of sexually active adults infected with the HPV virus, while other types of HPV are subclinical infections. The types of HPVs that cause genital warts are not associated with increased cancer risks and are caused by HPV types 6 and 11. HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35 are linked to cervical cancer. These high-risk HPVs may also be linked to increased risk of cancers of the vulva, anus, and bladder.
The strains of hpv that cause genital warts do not cause cervical cancer. There are 2 other strains of hpv that can cause cancer, I think they are 16 and 18.
When you have the pap test request that dna typing is done to find out for sure what strains you may have. There are well over a 100 and most cause no harm.
