One thing they should be looking for is trichomoniasis, which can cause a profuse, smelly discharge. Your partner should be treated as well. Although this is a sexually transmitted virus, it is able to survive outside the body for unusually long times, and as such, some authorities think it can be transmitted through nonsexual contact (wet towels, locker rooms, perhaps even toilet seats) as well. So don't automatically assume any infidelity if this is your diagnosis.
