I bought my fetal doppler with digital readout on Andi's recommendation, at $115 from the site she named, and it works great.  It only comes with one tube of gel these days, maybe they got feedback that two was too many or maybe they're just saving a few bucks.  (I'm at a little more than 22 weeks and have heard the hb with it since 12 weeks, and am almost through with one tube of gel, so you might ask about ordering an extra tube when you order.)

I agree, the bebe sounds ones are pieces of junk. I bought one of those when I was pg with my oldest and even at term I could never get it to work!!

you can rent a doppler and hear it sooner.. I never could get those bebe sound monitors to work, but the dopplers are what the drs use. you can search on google for them.. I think they range $25-30 a month though

I bought mine from www.healthchecksystems.com for $115 which included free 3 day shipping and 2 tubes of the gel. I started hearing fleeting heartbeats at 8 weeks and then more consistently around 9-10 weeks. The one i bought has a digital readout, which is awesome. My OB nurses can't wait until I deliver because I am donating mine to the office to rid them of the awful one they have. Several other women on here and the Maternal Child forum have purchased the same one i have based on my recommendation and so far everyone seems to like it. It is a lot cheaper than renting if you plan on using it for a while or having more children. This is my last one, but I did want that reassurance with this one as I was always on edge with with others.

Good luck!

And I forgot to add, it is also really great to be able to share the experience with my kids and other fmaily members. My 4 year old loves hearing his baby brother's heartbeat, it really helped him to connect with him before the big kicks started : )

I hope you find something you like that works for you.

There are several women here who have rented fetal dopplers.  They are the same type as used in ob offices.  I looked into it but have not bothered since I started feeling movement.  Typically you can here the baby starting at around 12 weeks.  Some women here the baby earlier then others.  I can't remember the site I looked at but there are several out there. Just do a search on rent fetal doppler.  You can buy them on ebay for about $200.
