You need to supplement immediately.  The iron count is probably your ferritin levels which is your iron storage.  Your haemoglobin is normal because that's what's circulating in your blood because it's taken from your stores.

Your count is very low.  It depends on what lab did your test but the last one I had here gave normal levels as between 30-200 (not sure of the units).  Mine were 35 but although they looked normal I felt ****.

I was speaking to a health professional and they think that my levels should much higher to feel normal ie 50-70.  And since taking some supplementation I certainly feel better.

I'm taking ferro gradumet (325mg) a day with vitamin C (to enhance absorption).  You can take your iron with orange juice if you like instead of a supplement.  If taking a higher dose supplement the constipation can be a problem.

What did the doctor say that diagnosed you?  Some people need iron injections or a blood transfusion with levels that low.  Your exhaustion points to a serious problem.  You can start with a lower dose but you may need a higher dose to start you off.

But it's something that you need to discuss with a health professional.  You'll be on the supplements for a few months at least.

You need to supplement with iron.  Mine was that low before I started supplementing it.  I wasn't able to take the prescription iron supplements, so I was told to take chelated iron at 50 mg to even 100 mg until my iron was up to normal by more than one doctor.  Then, I am to continue to take the 25 mg Gentle Iron or Easy Iron, which is the RDA.  Make sure you check with your own doctor before taking high doses of iron, though, because high doses can be hard on one's heart.  I don't know which organs are affected by such low doses of iron, but I do know that it's dangerous to have chronic iron deficiency anemia.
