lower body temperature and birth control pill

by Tianna311, May 18, 2007 12:00AM
recently I have had a low body temperature for the past few months- usually betweet 97.2-97.8, as a result I have been tested for thyroid problems (negative).
so last week I stopped taking my birth control pill, and this week I noticed my body temperature went up-
the from 98.0 - and today it was actually 98.6 for the first time in a very long time.
I found it interesting, and I wonder if taking the pill, actually affects the thyroid in some way, seeing that it is a synthetic hormone, and the thyroid regulates hormones.

during ovulation the body temperature is raised to increase fertilization, so if you are not ovulating then your body temperature is lower, and since you do not ovulate on the pill, hence lower bt.

the side effects of taking the pill do not include lower body temperature, but I feel this may be overlooked due to the 'insignificance' of lower- rather than higher- follow?
and side effects do include depression etc. and when your body temperature is lower - this can lead to depression, so I feel they are interconnected in some way-

anyway, I wanted to run my theory by a Dr. to see if it were in fact viable, I am  curious of your opinion on this.

Well, just a thought. I have been having body temp issues as well, but the opposite. My waking  temp is usually (when I am not on BC) arounf 96.5 - 97.5 (before ovulation), which I have read is not actually low..and that most people dont run at 98.6, that some do, but overall, it is a myth and it dosen't mean you neccessarily have thyroid issues either. So, mine has been high, aruond 97.8 -98.7 apon waking..which freaks me out because I just had my period a week ago, its been 7 days, and I would think my temp should be low right now. I know consistent high temps can mean your pregnant, although my period was a full period and on time and I have no other symptoms of pregnancy. I took 3 preg. tests, all negative. But this is the first time I have ever taken my temp while on BC, so I don't know if this is normal? Especially after what I just read from you which makes me confused.
Although one thing I want to point out is, at least what I though of how it worked, your body dosen't raise its temp to help fertilize the egg, it raises because a new hormone is released (progestrone)...and while you are on BC, you don't ovulate, but it is not because you just don't ovulate, it is because BC makes synthetic hormones that match the progestrone hormone released makes your body think you have already ovulated. So that made me think maybe its normal for my temp to be higher, since it traditionally is supposed to be after you ovulate, and if your body is always thinking you have already ovulated (hence why it relases no eggs), that my temp would be high all the time if it fits with this theory? But I am confused..and I hope I haven't confused everyone else.
I have read of other people thinking there temp is lower on BC and also of one other girl who had consistently high temps while on it for two years,..so maybe it can go either way. I am just concerned and hoping I am not pregnant and it is just normal for my temp to be so high right after my period.
