Some odors are affiliated with an std so you should go see an doctor to eliminate that and find out exactly what is the matter.

Don't try an over-the-counter preparation before seeing your ob-gyn.  By the fact that it became so noticeable on the last day of your period, it sounds like BV, which needs to be treated with antibiotics, and though is not serious in itself, can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease with ramifications for your future fertility.  Look up BV (bacterial vaginosis or gardnerella) and see if that sounds similar, and go get checked.  Your boyfriend might need to be treated at the same time (ask your doc) to keep from passing the bacteria back and forth.
