nipple sensitivity

i am 54 y.o.; 2 years ago, i stopped menstruating for 10 months, only to resume with a vengance (heavy flow, terrible cramps, irritability).  5 months ago, i stopped bleeding again.  for the past week my breast nipples are extremely sensitive and sore to the touch.  i had my last gyn exam, breast exam, mamogram and pap smear 10/06; all normal results.  the tender, sore nipples is something i've never experienced before, but am concerned about.  there is no cracking of nor discharge from the nipples.  what might this be symptomatic of?

The weirdest thing has started happening to me.  My left breast has started tingling, staying erect and itching, but when I mindlessly scratch it, it hurts.  It kind of feels like when I was first getting breasts or when I was pregnant, but I am 43.  I don't know what is going on.  I am very self concious of this prutruding nipple and now the other side is beginning to do the same thing, just not as bad.  Have you found out what caused this?  Recently stopped all birth control after getting my tubes tied and started on Cymalta after some life changes.  So I really don't know where to start.  At first I felt a pulling sensation from the nipple to the inside of the breast and it almost felt inverted.  It's the same breast MD Anderson is following for cysts, but there haven't been any changes for 18 months.  Please share any info you have.

Hormone changes comes to mind.  I'd check in with the gyno and tell what has changed lately and see what she says.
