ovarian cyst

Just been told i have a 11cm cyst on my right ovaries and they have found blood. waiting to see a gynecolgist. has anyone experinced this? and what treatment im i likly to have? i am 42 years old.

Usually when a cyst gets beyond the 5cm size they want to remove it. There's too great a risk of rupture or torsion (the weight can make it twist and then you have a medical emergency). When you say they found blood, do you mean the cyst has blood in it? That would make it a hemorrhagic cyst. My daughter had one recently (only 5 cm) and it burst. Quite uncomfortable.

If you're concerned about it being malignant, remember, 95% of ovarian cysts are benign. I had a 10 cm cyst removed in Feb. and everything checked out fine. And I'm menopausal which means the odds are a little less in my favor.

Definitely follow up with the gyno and don't be surprised if they want to do surgery. It would be to your benefit. If you have more questions, you can also post over on the ovarian cyst forum. There's a lot of women that have gone through what you're facing right now.
