You don't ovulate over a period of days, you ovulate in a moment. It is the action of an egg popping out of the ovary. It happens like a little volcano -- pop! Out it is!
If what you are asking is how long the egg is then viable, it is said to be viable and open to being fertilized, for 24 to 36 hours.
As specialmom says, sperm can live for 5-6 days (some research says longer but some says sperm is too weak by then to penetrate the egg). So if you are wondering, for example, if sex on the 1st would cause you to get pregnant on the 4th, yes it could, even with the shorter lifespan of the egg.
Some say ovulation lasts for 12 to 24 hours and some say 24 to 48 hours. However, sperm can live a few days prior to ovulation and still impregnate you. Knowing exactly when you ovulate is a science and difficult! Understanding our cycle is the first step. Day one of your period is the first day of your cycle. It lasts until the day before your next period (which you know exactly when that is WHEN you get your period). Most women ovulate mid way through and on day 14 on average. good luck
PS: they also sell ovulation kits to help you find that small window that you are ovulating.
Usually a couple of days I found when I used to ovulate.
