pain after breastfeeding

by bluejay003, Mar 20, 2007 12:00AM
my son is 10 months old. he was exclusively breastfed until he was 6 1/2 months old. I always had pain in my breast from feeding..had thrush numerous times. I've stopped bf in mid december but am still getting the pain, mostly the left breast. Has anyone else experienced this? My doctor ordered a mammogram today. She did a breast exam and found no thing. She said it could also be a chest muscle..any suggestions?????

Hi there, I don't know if this relates to your condition or not but I had a stingy pain while nursing both of my kids (more in the left breast). I also got mastitis once in the L breast. But, 6 years ago I had increasing pain, I let it go thinking that it was just the fibrocystic breast that I have. Then, dark blood came out of my nipple. I was so scared of cancer that I didn't know what to do. I was 31 at the time. I had a mamogram (mammogram) and it didn't show anything wrong. My doctor opted for exploratory surgery first, as they sometimes do a test that injects dye into the mamary ducts. But he figured since I was already bleeding and a nervous wreck that if something showed up it would need taken out anyway. I had multiple mamary duct papilomas. They are not cancerous. They were so large that they ruptured the mamary ducts-that's where the bleeding came from. The dr said that the ducts should be as thin as spaghetti and mine were bigger than his thumb. They are pretty much like a wart inside of the ducts.  I had the pain for at least 8 years, but ignored it. If all of your test come back inconclusive for the pain, maybe suggest the dye injected into the ducts? It would have prevented my problems early on. I forget the name of the test-something____gram?? It is visualized in radiology. I hope this doesn't scare you, hopefully it's just a sore muscle from carrying the baby on that side or something. Sorry this is so lengthy, best of luck to you.

Did you treat the thrush effectively?  Did the pain ever go away?

Sometimes if you have what is thought is thrush but you can't seem to fix it then you actually have a bacterial infection and need antibiotics.  You can also get a 3 way cream that treats thrush, bacterial infection and inflammation.
