painful right ovary

3wk ago I was lying in bath and saw walnut sized lump rise up just above pubic hair on right side, sat up and it disappeared.I panicked and visited gp.on being questioned,my 'symptoms' for about last 2/3 months were;niggling regular pain to lower right groin sometimes upto lower ribs and thru to lower back area.worse when bending over to right side.feeling of fullness, like a dull pressure and sensation of wanting to 'rearrange' insides on the right side to be comfortable.sweats.deep stabbing pain during intercourse,  usually dry skin but waking to visible film of grease over face.smaller harder stools but not constipation.piles! and blood(not in stools so assume from piles)I have some facial hair cos dark haired and fair skin but recent influx of this and hair on nipples.so..was sent for ultrsound 3wk later.in meantime had stabbing pain briefly, enough to double over on right side.during ultrasound,no lumps found but pain when scanner ran directly over right ovary tho i was told that everything was fine.i have always had heavy periods even with the mirena coil fitted.tho recently periods have been heavy but much shorter and then brownish)I have 3 children and got the coil after last child, 5 yrs ago.I have come away from scan today feeling like im making it up but im not.I still have the same discomfort on the right hand side but what can I expect from my gp with the negative scan result. Surely there is something wrong with my right ovary or why would it be distinctly painful when the scanner was pressed over it. (as opposed to the left side which didnt feel painful at all)

I know this wss posted yrs ago but thought id reply anyways in case you are still searching for answers.  I had similar stabbing pains periodically for years. Periods were more painful with cramps.  Pain during sex. Pressure feeling in abdominal area,  hurt even to have husband arm lay across lieer belly area. After 2nd vaginal ultra sound was diagnosed with fibroids and had a full hystorectomy Dec 2016.

Honestly, it could be as simple as an ovarian cyst, sharp pain during intercourse, or on either side of your ovary. brown discharge. They can be hormonal and rupture causing pain and not showing up on ultrasounds (because they burst).

I am 21 years old and i have been getting similar pain in my right ovary area for the past year or so. I have been to my GP and i had urine tests (to check it wasnt bladder infection) and been for an ultrasound, which apparently came back perfectly normal. It it like a stabbing pain which is constant for 20-30mins. Hurts when i'm just sat down - not moving, hurts during intercourse and hurts generally if i'm walking or on a bus. I am really worried as my GP told me its all normal and theres nothing more to do but i know from what i'm feeling it isn't 'normal'
I feel the same as some of you, as if my GP is implying it all in my head and i'm just imagining it. I don't know what the next step would be??

I forgot to add that I have NOT taken Mirena so I don't think your pain is related to that. I wish we could all ban together and figure this out but maybe if people post all their symtoms and findings we might find a common thread.

I have been on birth control in the past and the stupid patch which I just realized last week that I always put on my right side. With all of the side affects the patch had, I thought it could have caused this condition I now have.

I don't know if you are still checking this post but I have the exact same thing. The lump that pops up and then if I press it it goes away! I get pain every month 2 weeks after/before my period. It's always on the right, it radiates out to my lower abdomin, pelvic bone, lower back and sometimes shoots down my right thigh. It's HORRIBLE. I too started a pain jounal. I have had 2 MRI's, a CAT scan and 3 ultra sounds to be told I'm fine. They wanted to do a lapro surgery to ck but with the cost of the other tests I declined. I also get slightly constipated and a little gassy. Sometimes my anus hurts during the cramps as well.

I compare them to labor because they are so strong and I have to breath through them. I'm sure ppl at work think I'm crazy when I'm in pain because I know I look insane! I was taking lots of pain reliever but then became worried about overuse and they also stopped really having an affect on the pain so now I just muddle through and use a heating pad which seems to help the most. Like you I also get nausiated sometimes during the cramps and always feel exhausted when one ends. I usually have cramps for 2 days and get about 6 a day that last anywhere from 15-45 minutes. I also have the facial hair growth when the cramps are coming like you explained which may point to hormonal changes.

I finally went to a chiropractor who thought that I sounded like I had PCOS. She said that another thing is that I eat WAY too much sugar. Some women have trouble with their body thinking sugar is estrogen so you start constracting/cramping when you have the cysts. I have tried very hard to almost eliminate sugar from my diet but I have only seen a slight improvement with the pain.

Just some things to think about. If you check this, can you give me an update on what you found? I don't want to go through any removal of anything or surgery I would just like to find a way to make it stop!!

My GP for two years implied "it was all in my mind". Finally, at the urging of an endocrinologist (for a thyroid problem), an ultra-sound has been done and apparently showed something...because I received an immediate referral to a GYN and an apology (sort of). The GYN is female and associated with a Women's Health Center and that has made all the difference in the world. Apparently, they actually view the same "discomfort" my GP did...as PAIN...and not only do they want to manage the pain, they want to fix it! So, please do not be lulled into thinking that somehow it's in your mind...it's not...it's in their mind and if men had the same degree of pain in "their" reproductive system they would not receive the "pat on the head" and toughen up response... I'm not sure where my pain is stemming from, but your descriptins match almost word for word what my body has been doing... Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but the GYN I have now, has made me hopeful that one way or another she's going to "fix" it...

I also have pain (moderate++) on my right side at waist level radiating down towards mid abdomen.  I have had surgery for  ovarian cysts about 5 yrs ago.  The pain at that time differed to this one and I am currently searching the Net for a diagnosis of my symptoms while I wait to see my doctor.  Some of my research has led me to think that my pain may be related to my gallblader ie. gallstones.  I noticed that you did not consider gallstones nor have any of the other people. I thought you might be interested in knowing that while doing your research.  I do wish you can find out what the problem is and don't give up till you do.

I am having the exact same symptoms and I have had a Mirena for two years.  Pain in my lower right side that comes and goes, a bulge that appears and disappears on my lower right side, generalized pain, trouble sleeping, etc.  I truly believe you are not making this up.

I have had a full CT scan and a pelvic ultrasound - they showed nothing but a small ovarian cyst.  I'm tired of living like this (I'm 36 and extremely active) so I'm going to have the Mirena removed to see if it helps.

thank you. I had my follow up with my gp who reiterated that the scan was clear and that my original blood tests were normal. I ended up getting tearful trying to explain how I was still getting pain and that I had
kept a mental record of the type and degree of pain, when etc. I said that I was still also getting the pain and stiffness in my shoulders and arms through the night and also getting pain in my thighs in the day and night. I also have become much more emotional and irritable prior to a period.I said again how I wasnt sleeping properly, sometimes due to pain but sometimes because I just simply cant seem to sleep proerly.I tried to explain the pressing, sometimes stinging feeling as though cystitis but without pain on urinating.and that I still have the pressure on my rectum.sorry going over old ground but I feel like I have to justify how Im feeling since all tests to date show Im perfectly ok!Anyway, to sum up..more bloods were taken and I was asked to come back in few days to take out my coil and have a new one in.Have been signed off work for two weeks.GP says my pain is more than likely just anxiety and the other stuff probably just due to the age of my coil.So maybe I am causing these symptoms myself then? I am not depressed but I guess I am anxious but I feel the symptoms came before the anxiety and not the other way round. I guess I will just have to wait and see.I will do some research as you suggested. thankyou all again.

Endometriosis is a very strange disease.  A very small spot can cause severe pain in some women, while others with Stage IV can have little to no discomfort.  I was one of the unfortunate ones who had Stage IV with debilitating pain.

No, endo typically does not show up on an ultrasound.  The only way to absolutely diagnose it is surgery.  A laparoscopy is typically done to diagnose.

My US last year (before my hyst) did not show the fact that my uterus and ovaries were bound in endometrial adhesions.  Neither did my CAT scan or MRI.  However, they DID show the large cysts that had engulfed my ovaries.

There are many, many resources out there to learn about endometriosis.  There are also many support groups.  You can do a search on Yahoo groups and find several.

If you believe you are suffering from endo, please find a doc who specializes in it.  My experience with regular OB/Gyns was not all that stellar in terms of getting help for my disease.  I hope this helps.

I'm sorry you're having so much pain.  I suffered from endometriosis for 20+ years and had a hysterectomy last year, so I am familiar with the kind of pain you describe.  If you cannot find any relief/answers from a regular gynecologist or your PCP, then I would suggest looking for a pelvic pain clinic in your area - if you're near/in Michigan, there's a great one at the University of Michigan Hospital:

Literally saved my life (not to mention my bowel and urinary functions).

Good Luck.

thankyou again for replying. going to gp tomorrow to the discuss the scan results (which I already know were clear)I am going to try hard to make her see that I just feel something isnt right.Im also going to ask to have the mirena coil removed if there is any chance that it is causing me to feel like I do.You have helped me feel ok about this.I know Im not imagining these things and I just want to try and find out 'what's going on inside' without sounding like a hyperchondriac(arghh spelling).I also want to find out whats 'normal' to feel down there because I cant feel what I felt other day now.thank god I got my hubby to feel aswell when it was there or I really do think that i would sound crazy. You obviously have more pressing concerns than I do and it is refreshing that you have taken the time to support others.I hope you are getting support yourself. best wishes.

HI COMP,I HAD A PARTIAL HYSTERECTOMY LAST YEAR IN MARCH.I HAD ENDOMETRIOSIS.I GOT TO KEEP MY OVARIES,BUT I DON'T KNOW FOR HOW MUCH LONGER.I ALL SO HAVE OVARIAN CYST.DON'T GIVE UP,UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT IS WRONG.I WENT TO A STUPID GYNECOLOGIST IN 2000,HE DIDN'T TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN TO ME.IT ALL MOST COSTED ME MY LIFE.I FINALLY FOUND A GOOD GYNECOLOGIST LAST YEAR,SHE TOOK THE TIME TO LISTEN TO ME.THE ONLY BAD THING IS I HAD A HEART ATTACK THAT NIGHT AT THE HOSPITAL AFTER I HAD MY HYSTERECTOMY.I FEEL BAD FOR YOU BECAUSE  I KNOW WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH.DON'T LET YOUR DOCTOR MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR DWELLING IT IN THE GROUND,IT'S YOUR BODY AND YOU KNOW HOW YOUR BODY FEELS.YOU NEED TO TELL HER THAT,SO THAT SHE WILL SEE THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED.TAKE CARE OF YOUR SELF.TNT406

yes, the lump did appear and then I couldnt locate it.I am feeling my tummy and groin daily to try and find out how it 'should' feel and where there is any tenderness. I always have an uncomfortable feeling in my lower right side which is more pronounced at times than others.I said how I feel like reaching inside and moving things about to a more comfortable position. The best way I can describe that feeling is that it is like when I was pregnant and the baby was for example in a position that was pushing on things, like say ribs.I often feel like that now, like there is just something in the way.I am about day 13 in my cycle and on gently feeling my groin I could feel what I assume must be my right ovary which was hard and distinct.this was just above pubic hair and slightly to the right. If this is my ovary then I thinking that maybe this is usual at this point in my cycle. My gp is a lovely lady and I have not been back yet to discuss results of scan (go on tues)and its probably just me but I feel that if the scan appeared normal then she will think im wasting her time. But I just have this nagging feeling as to why am I still having this constant discomfort on the right side of my body, which sometimes travels further up towards my waist but always to right side. I also thought that we ovulated from alternate sides so I wondering why would my right ovary always seems to be tender.if you are a woman, can you feel your ovaries through your tummy or what ever other 'body bits' are in that position? can you feel both sides? or can you feel something els quite hard in that area?

thank you for replies.I had wondered about a hernia (I do a lot of exercise)and was asked to perform a series of sit ups by my gp who looked for any bulging during the exercise though there was none.I had been ultimately worried bout cancer on seeing the lump but obviously since the scan didnt detect any lumps then it cannot be that. A friend said she had been told that the mirena coil could cause cysts in some women and that these could come and go like my 'lump' had.I guess I am just still worried bout the other things and Im wondering if its a hormonal thing. I feel like I am wasting my gp's time as the scan showed up nothing unusual but I am still concerned why I am feeling like I am. I find that I have bouts of tiredness and I also have become very stiff across the shoulders through the night and in the mornings, being very painful to move for a while.( I am only 34)I dont mean to sound like im asking for a diagnosis but I guess im just trying to see if anyone else out there has experienced similar?has anyone else experienced these side effects with the mirena after 5 years?
After having the clear scan I feel tremendous relief but I also feel like it means the door is closed on being able to ask my gp to probe further on why these things are happening. That may sound daft and I guess that I am seeking a little comfort and reassurance here.

Hi Comp, How are you feeling today? This lump you talked about it comes and goes right?Has your doctor thout about maybe doing a MRI of you abdomen, ther's a possisbility it might show up better. If you feel your doctor isn't treating you sufficiently maybe you need to think down the lines of finding a new primary care doctor.I will do some research on the internet about lumps that disappear then resurface O.K.,until then take care of your self.TNT406.

I agree that a lump that comes and goes like that in the location you describe is very suspicious for a hernia. Whether there's something else going on, too, is hard to say; but virtually nothing other than a hernia comes and goes like that. In a female, depending on the exact location, it could be either an "inguinal" or a "femoral" hernia.

its possible it may be hernia,i have had many hernia repairs, although they have been umbilical hernias, but i also have been having pelvic pain and surrounding area pain, had ultrasound to rule out any cysts, etc, it came back fine,ob thought it was scar tissue from previous surgeries, long story short, they went in to remove the scar tissue and ended up taking out my right ovary, due to a massive amount of cysts and also found a large uterine fibroid. my ultrasound was done 2 weeks before my surgery, so its possible you do have something and they didnt detect it.good luck

You need to ask your GP to refer you to a good gynocologist.I don't know what the pain can becoming from,I am not a doctor this is only a patient to patient medical forum. We do not give medical advice, because we do not have knowledge and are not allowed to for you safety and well being.Good Luck and take care of your self TNT406.

sorry..but quickly in addition to above... I guess Im worried because although my right ovary appeared 'normal' in the scan, it was acutely painful whilst being pressed on with the scanner but I couldnt feel any discomfort elsewhere.what could be the reasons for this pain?
