pregnancy or irregular period

by wonderingthings111, Oct 11, 2005 12:00AM
This is the situation.  Sept 18th we had unprotected sex for like 15 seconds.  WE stopped and then used protection.  Her period started around the 5th of semptember.  Then october 7th she thought she had her period but it only lasted one day.  It was very light. and stopped october 8th.  She is 17 and this has never happened to her before.  The thing is if implantation bleeding takes place 6-12 days after doc then october 7th would be too far away for it to be that even if the doc was 5 days after we had sex.  she is not on the pill so i have no idea what could have caused this.  Also, she is against taking a pregnancy test and feels very uncomfortable doing it.  I would like to know if there is a need for her to take one or if i am just worrying too much over nothing.  Thanks for your help.

Sounds like it could be several things.  Implantation occurs 6- 12 days after she ovulates/conceives, not when you two had sex.  So, if you two had sex on the 18th, and she ovulated and conceived a couple of days later, it is possible it could be implantation bleeding.  Second, she is young and it is possible her hormones are changing and it is affecting her cycle.  Unfortunately there isn't much you can do being on the male end of this relationship if she doesn't want to take a pregnancy test.

Ask her if she has had any pregnancy like symptoms, such as sore nipples, mood swings, or here's a good one, ask her if she'll take her temperature first thing when she wakes up in the morning.  Typically, if she's not preg, she should have a temp around 97-97.9.  Women who are pregnancy tend to run a higher temperature, such as 98.6 and higher.  That way, it's not as nerve-racking as taking a pregnancy test.  If she runs a temp. higher than normal, she may need to talk to someone about possible pregnancy.  Any amount of unprotected sex leaves room for pregnancy, always wrap up before sex and you might avoid this situation in the future.  Hope I helped a little.  Good luck!

Well even if she ovulated and concieved the 23rd which would be 5 days after we did it, then it still would have been 14 days after we did it.  And having the doc being 5 days after we had sex i think it very unlikely.  She agreed to take her temperature in the morning.  The only thing is i don't know how accurate that will be since everyone has a different temperature.  98.6 i thought was average so having slightly above that is very likely.  So let me know what your thoughts are on that.

Thanks.

In my opinion, it's doubtful she's pg.  If you had unprotected sex for a very short time and there was definitely no ejaculation before the condom then I'd say the chances are pretty slim.  Yes, there's a chance, but slim.

Her period, although very weird, sounds too late to be implantation bleeding.  Things like that happen alot to women even if it's the first time for her.

Also, make sure she understands that a pg test is a urine test that you take at home.  She does not have to go to the doc to take the test.  You can buy them at any store for under $10.  I like the "Answer" brand b/c they're cheap and have been accurate every time for me (both pg and not pg).

Good luck!

Taking her temperature won't tell you anything.  That only works if you've been tracking it for a while and understand your normal range (just as you said, everyone is different).  Plus you need a special Basal Body Temperature thermometer to get the accuracy.

Women are not the same when it comes to avg temps.  I know, normal temp is 98.6, but this doesn't apply to all women at the same time.  Usually, before a woman ovulates, her temperatures range from 97.0 - 97.8 roughly.  After she ovulates, it can run from 98.0 - 98.6 and higher depending on if she's preg.  If she just had her period, her temp should drop back down in the 97 range.  If she's pregnant, she could be running a temp of 98.6 or above.

It doesn't sound like she's preg, the chances of your sperm staying in her over 5 days is highly unlikely.  My guess is that her hormones are changing and it is affecting her period. I know mine did at 18. Yes, make sure she knows you don't get home pregnancy tests from the doctor, go to a drug store to get them and you two do it together if her temp. turns out to be high.  I only mentioned the temp method since this might be a little less stressful than going out in public to buy a hpt.  Please let us know how it turns out.

Oh yeah, you need a digital thermometer to take these temps or one that shows a tenth to a degree mark.  That's what I've been using, and it works fine.  It's only a precautionary step if you want to try it instead of taking a hpt if that's too scary for her.  It won't tell if you're preg., but if she's running a temp of 97.2 degrees, then I doubt she would be preg.

Thanks for all the help so far.  I have been very worried lately and after reading a light period that lasts a day is a sign of being pregnant i got very scared.  The timing just seemed to be a little off.  She is 17 now and got her period a year or two ago and says she is fairly new to it all.  Also, i was wondering that since it was our first time having sex if that could mess with her period at all for any reasons.  I am sure she is really stressed out and that also might be effecting things.  She agreed to take a pregnancy test but i would still like to avoid it if at all possible.  Also, tomorrow morning she will take her temperature when she wakes up.  It sounds like chances are i am ok but it still worries me.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Taking a hpt is no big deal at all.  She should just take one and get it over with.  You'll have your answer and that will be the end of it.  Again, it's doubtful she's pg, so you'll get your negative result and be on your way.

They really are a big relief to take and finally KNOW the answer.

Good luck!

She agreed and she will take one this weekend.  I guess we will go with that answer one that was talked about earlier since i don't know of any others that people think are good.  Let me know if any others would be better.  thanks.

You can also buy the ClearBlue Easy Digital test.  That is more expensive ($15 maybe) for one test.  But it's digital and reads "Pregnant" or "Not Pregnant" so there's no way to mis-read the results.

The stores carry several brands but any of them will work very well now that she's a week late.  Any test will work fine.

Yeah i will go with one of them.  I have no idea why she is late though.  I am thinking she has to be pregnant even though it seems way to late to be implantation bleeding and i have no idea what else it could be.  I mean i guess she wasn't late.  Just very very light which is not normal.  Any ideas on what it could have been?

S-T-R-E-S-S!

Like I said before, it happens to most women even if it's the first time for her.

There are posts on this website CONSTANTLY of "I'm late, first time this has ever happened, could I be pg?".  It's a very normal occurance.  It's happend to me twice, that I can remember.

It sounds like she had a weird period.  Someone above mentioned that around 18 years old her hormones shifted and her period was a bit irregular.  Or, since your g-friend has not had her period for very long, she doesn't know yet but she'll turn out to be one of those people that have irregular periods.  That can be correct by taking birth control.

There could be a million reasons, and she has to rule out the "pregnancy" reason before she can get rid of the "stress" reason and then see if it's a "hormonal" reason.  Does that make sense?

Yeah i understand.  It is just strange that is happened for the first time now.  What were the chances of that.  Anyways, i guess all i can do it wait for this weekend to see what happens.

She took her temperature the other morning.  It was 97.2.  So that is a good sign.  I will let you know how everything goes.
