recurring BV...and now feeling depressed

I have been dealing with a constant burning sensation and was diagnosed with BV.(although I haven't noticed any odor)I had had a yest infection, which is what I think started this, and treated it with Monistat 1day (which my doc said was too harsh and not to use it agian)The yeast infection symptoms whent away but I had this burning sensation and that is what brings me to this never ending cylce of BV. First I was given Flagyl for 7 days, took all the pills, saw some improvemnt for a few days while taking the pills, had my period and still felt the same. I went back and was given Flagyl for 10 days and Diflucan b/c she said she also saw some yeast again. I finished all meds, and for a few days I felt back to normal (it was GREAT), now I am just getting over my period and I feel this burning sensation again, I mean it's not painful just annoying and sometimes I notice it, and sometimes I don't. Could it be something else? I do notice that I have had to pee a little more recently, could it be a UTI although I don't really have any pain when urinating? How can I get rid of this if none of the meds are working? Is there another antibiotic that may help? I am looking for anything, haven't had sex in almost 3 months (thankfully I have a very understanding finace) But I am feeling totally depressed from this. I am also trying to change my diet. I have increased the amount of yogurt I eat, started drinking DanActive, and trying to cut out a lot of sugars. PLEASE HELP!! Thank you!

Hello Ladies,
I’m writing this because I struggled with first UTI’s then yeast infections and after that Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) for several years. I finally figured out how to fix it and I wanted to share it with you all who have probably been looking for a solution for a long time. This WILL work. Please spread this information far and wide, I want to help as many women as possible.
BV as well as most vaginal infections are a combination of two issues usually: (1) imbalanced ratio between healthy bacteria and bad bacteria; bv is a result of an overgrowth of bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria to counteract it (2) not enough acidity; the vagina, when in balance should have a pH that’s below 4.5, anytime the pH rises above this number you’re gonna have issues.
(1) Can result from all kinds of reasons like health issues, use of antibiotics, hormones, etc.
(2) Can be a result of all of the above but also not that semen is basic and therefore raises the pH in your vagina when you have unprotected sex.
The key in curing BV and I believe it will also work for yeast infections and UTI’s is to both allow the healthy bacteria to regenerate as well as safely lowering acidity in the vagina. These are the steps I took after several courses of antibiotics did nothing to keep my BV from coming back.
What you need:
1.) If you have an active infection you should do something to address that first, I used BV essentials. And it worked for me even for a reoccurring infection.
2.) pH testing strips (from 0-14). That way you can check the pH of your vagina. If you google “pH testing strips 0-14” you will find lots of sites to buy them from. Just make sure they are at least 0-5 because anything above that will do you no good cause your vagina needs to be at 4.5 or below.
3.) Purfem Vaginal Suppositories. I found mine on Amazon. You insert these pills directly into the vagina which will replenish the specific good bacteria that belong in there. One package can last 7-10 days.
4.) Boric Acid Capsules. You can either make these yourself by buying boric acid powder and gelatin capsules or you can buy them already made. You insert these WITH the purfem capsules, this acidifies your vagina and it also makes sure the good bacteria have the optimal conditions to grow.
5.) Water works. Found it on Amazon. This is a system that helps you “rinse” your vagina. I use it when I’m having unprotected sex to rinse out the semen and I always follow up with a boric acid capsule.
To prevent re-occurring infections permanently
1.) After you have [temporarily] cured your BV, insert one Purfem capsule and one boric acid capsule ALL THE WAY IN THERE for 7-10 days at night. You will have to use a liner/pad or tampon because your vagina will flush it out. Sometimes once you’re acidic enough down there you might get a little sore so use your best judgment.
2.) Rinse with Waterworks after unprotected sex and insert a boric acid capsule as well (to reacidify.)
3.) If this does not knock it out you may have to do the purfem/boric acid combo for more than ten days but I doubt it. Usually probiotics alone don’t work because your vagina is not acidic enough and boric acid alone doesn’t work because there’s not enough good bacteria. The combo is what makes this so powerful.
4.) If you have any kind of itch just insert one or two boric acid capsules overnight and that usually takes care of it.
5.) After not being BV free for more than 2 weeks in almost 3 years, I have not had any issues for over six months. And I’ve only done this whole routine once. The key in maintenance I believe is 4.) as it keeps everything in balance.
If you want to know more about boric acid or probiotics those are easy things to research.

Antibiotics are known to only kill the problem for a couple of weeks and then it returns! Putting suppositories in your V may work, but do you really want to do that for the rest of your life? Supplements, herbal pills, boric acid, and tampons soaked in hydrogen peroxide may do the trick momentarily, but do they target the root cause? No!

Many diseases begin in the psyche. Bacterial vaginosis is a disease directly related to improper immune system function. Your immune system is directly connected to your psyche. Think about it: when people are mentally stressed, they get sick, zits, infections, tired, heartburn, ulcers, etc.

In some way or another, your immune system is being assaulted by stress whether it be from overuse of antibiotics OR (more likely) mental stress. I urge you ALL to look at your relationships with your spouses, boyfriends, close friends, and work and ask yourself: am I regularly stressed out by one or more of these relationships?

If you are, you must take the steps to reduce stress in that area of your life, because believe it or not it is adversely affecting your health. You should NEVER settle for a stress-filled environment. Why? Because if you get used to chronic low levels of stress, you are setting your body up for serious trouble.

I was in an a verbally abusive relationship with a controlling man for three years. The third year, I moved in with him. Every month, I would get a yeast infection. My body was in a state of constant stress. I could feel in my gut something was very wrong, but ignored it because I wanted so desperately for things to work between us. A few months later, my monthly yeast infection was replaced by something a lot more menacing and foul: Bacterial Vaginosis.

I looked back at my life and wondered why I had this awful infection. I had never had these problems before. Then, I began to make the connection. Ignoring my gut feeling for so long resulted in a nasty infection that has taken 3 months to go away.

But it has gone away. There is no more smell, itching, or irritation. Why? He has gone away too. Or, rather, I have left. I haven't spoken to him in 2 weeks. In that two weeks, I noticed a drastic reduction in stress, a gradual disappearance of my symptoms, and a rise in my general health and well being.

I have done some research and found that your "gut" is intimately intertwined with your immune system AND healthy vaginal flora. After ignoring my gut feelings for so long, it was no small wonder that I was sick and stressed. My gut needed rehabilitation for all that I put it through.

All the stress I had been through had caused toxicity in my system! The normal, healthy, good bacteria were completely overtaken by unhealthy, sick-making bacteria and my body was feeling the strain. I began taking Femdophilus bacterial supplements (orally) twice a day for several weeks. These supplements contain two types of bacteria that help to re-establish healthy gut flora and, by proxy, healthy vaginal flora. They were all I needed to put me back in good health.

So there you have it: Bacterial Vaginosis is a whole-body disease with its beginnings in the mind. NEVER, EVER ignore your gut feelings! The body knows so much more than the mind. It is not irrational: in fact, the mind will lead you down pathways of irrationality and sickness! Overemphasis of the mind's power has led our civilization to the brink of disaster- why would our personal lives unfold differently?

Trust your gut. Nourish it. Feed it good food. Take care of it and it will take care of you and your entire body. Don't let anybody tell you it is wrong, because it is never wrong. You and your mind may be wrong, but it isn't. Foster a healthy mind-gut connection. Let your gut speak first and your mind translate.

Get rid of the stress in your life! Stressful people, stressful situations, and stressful thoughts. If you can't escape a stressful environment, make it priority #1 every single day to create a mental and or physical space where you can unwind and de-stress.

You must do this: it is the key to your health and the elimination of BV!

The only thing i have had any luck with so far is fem-dophilus. While I still have bv it has helped lessen the symptoms. I am thinking of trying femansol. I have not tried the tree tea oil. I too get the antibiotics, but I don't think it ever goes completely away.

I'm so glad that I found this discussion board as I have been experiencing similar problems for about a year.  I can relate to the frustration and annoyance that this causes. It seems as thought I am making dr. visits and taking time off from work to address the same issue over and over again.  I am a healthy eater and rarely am on antibiotics- I can't seem to figure it out. I did read about using tea tree oil as a preventive measure but have not tried it.  If anyone has and has had success with this please let me know.

Fem-dophilus, a Lactobacillus rhamnosus medicine  that has saved my life. Take 2 daily. Buy at your local whole foods. Take one in the morning and one at night with a glass of milk. I, like you, suffered from yeast and BV. I took a 7 day round of Flagyl and have continued on Femdophilus and have been relieved of my anxiety.

Good luck to all

I been going through the samething. First it was an UTI. Then after finishing the medicines I kept having the burning. Went to gyn and she saw only a few clue cells, but went ahead and treated me for BV with Flagyl. Then prescribed Diflucan. I finished everything and still feel irritated at times. I have been on a ton of antibiotics this pass summer. You constantly think is it an UTI, BV, or Yeast. I been to the gp and gyno. I took my final dose of Diflucan yesterday after finishing the Flagyl, and I hope I am finished with everything!!

I have had recurrent BV for about 6 months now. It does seem to get worse after my period, as a lot of you here describe. However, it seems to get better - but doesn't go away completely - when I drink a glass of water with 1 or 2 TBSP of apple cider vinegar (I see improvement about 24-36 hours later). I have not figured out the science of it yet, and feedback regarding ACV is mixed, but I have found it to be somewhat helpful. Particularly when also taking lactobacillus. I have also heard that the acidophilus strain reuteri is effective, though it is a bit difficult to find.

Btw, the low yeast diet should be used for at least 3 months. I have been on it for one month.

I was VERY surprised to be diagnosed with bv. At first glance, every website tells you it is from sex with MULTIPLE partners. This was so confusing to me because I don't have sex with multiple partners. I told my dr I thought it was from overuse of strong antibiotics but she disregarded this. Being that antibiotics kill good bacteria and what I have is an upset of bacteria in the vagina, it makes perfect sense to me. I began researching all of the things I could do. I found that problems such as yeast or an upset of bacteria actually begin in the stomach, not in the vagina. I have benefited from a low yeast/low mold diet. Here is the link:

http://www.drlockie.com/diet_view.fcm?articleid=13045&subsite=3

Here is another diet plan providing lists of what you should eat, what you shouldn't eat, and what you should only eat in moderation. I admit, this one is a little harder to follow:

http://www.wholeapproach.com/diet/foodlist.php

It can be very beneficial to begin taking probiotics (acidophilus). This will support growth of healthy bacteria in your body (and your vagina) and help to rebalance your vagina's "ecosystem." Buy them from a health food store, they have the best kinds. The difference between probiotics from walmart, for instance, and a health food store is that the ones from a health food store are likely to be kept in the fridge. This will make sure the bacteria is still alive when you take the probiotics. The cheap probiotics at walmart likely only have dead bacteria and this won't do you any good. Also, you can insert probiotics directly into the vagina. As for oral dosage, if the bottle says to take one a day, do that. But if the bottle says to take 1-3 a day, take 3. One with each meal.

Be sure to also buy some folic acid and take it every day.

You can insert plain, organic yogurt into the vagina. Some women do this every night for a week. Some do it every night for a month. Some women use tampons, but I opt for a turkey baster. I know it sounds funny lol but it's super easy to use. You can also put the yogurt all over the outside of the vagina for relief of bv symptoms. It works really well :)

Here is a link for natural cures and treatments for bv, it is a WONDERFUL site:

http://earthclinic.com/CURES/bacterial_vaginosis.html

Some women do state that apple cider vinegar treatment helps them with their bv problem, but honestly, it's just not logical. Apple cider vinegar is great stuff and is wonderful for treating many many ailments but bv simply isn't one of them, as it will kill more bacteria, worsening your bv.

Oh btw, there is a peroxide ****** you can make to flush the vagina with. I haven't tried it but many women say it works great. From what I have read, peroxide does the same job the missing bacteria in your vagina would do.

Lastly, eat a TON of yogurt!!! This will also help replenish your levels of good bacteria in your body.

If anyone wants to message me so we can talk about bv treatments, definitely feel free to do so :)

I hope this helps, good luck!

I thought I was the only one out there dealing with this horrible, recurring thing.  I have had BV "officially" 7 times in the last year.  I say officially because I feel as though it never really goes away.  I have been on the Metro the C stuff and it just never seems to go away completely.  The doctors at first were saying, this is very common, and most people have BV and they don't know it and it works itself out.  Well now its graduated to not working itself out and is actually mutated into Bladder problems too.  I seem to be so irritated that I constantly feel as if I have to go to the bathroom, yet there it is not a bladder infection it most likely is the BV.  When I treat the BV I get the Yeast Infection.  It is a never ending cycle.  Now the Doc is saying that there may be an underlying cause for this and we need to find out what that is????  I'm sick and tired of nothing working.  Has anyone found anything that works?

I have been to my gyno a countless number of times since about March... everytime I am diagnosed with BV.  It's almost like I expect it now when I don't have it for a few weeks.  I have been treated with all of the different creams and gels, and they will work only temporarily.  It's so incredibly frustrating and I wish that there was more knowledge about it.  There are a few things you can do however to prevent the bad bacteria from growing... like not wearing thongs (it allows you to breathe more), do not use anti bacterial soap or any kind of fragrance soap... I have always been into organic and natural products and foods, and I personally believe that a more natural approach helps your body to treat itself much more efficiently... My gyno also told me not to shave so much because the hairs actually protect the vagina from bad bacteria... And a healthy diet and exercise always help too.  While I was searching the internet for a more natural treatment for BV the other day, it seemed that boric acid capsules will clear things up.  I have yet to speak to my gyno about though... If anyone has any success with any medicines please share :)

I think that I may try this product next. All you hear about is how the PH is unbalanced so this is specifially for balancing the PH in the vagina....I'll reply back and say if it works! Plus you only use it once every 3 days!

Yannaboo I am JUST like you! I am married and have had my BV/Yeast infection for over a year! I am at my wicks end too. The drs act as if it's just so common to have this but hten when the treatments don't work they are stumped and act like you said you have a rare disease! I hate it and I wish I could count the # of appointments I've been to where antibiotics are forced down my throat. This month alone I've been prescribed 3 different ones! So far...nothing. The dr even told me to try smearing plain yogurt around the infected area....they love to toy with you. I did smear the yogurt and it did nothing but dry up and itch worst! I am seriously affected mentally as well as physically by this. I feel your pain.

Hello.  I too have recurring BV and chronic yeast and I have had this problem for over two years now.  No one seems to know the answer to how to get rid of this annoying disease and I am beyond frustrated and depressed.  I am constantly itching, burning, bloated, gassy (sorry for such vivid details) and now my fiance is experiencing gassy, bloating problems too.  I've been to the doctors more times than I can count and they have prescribed it all : Flagyl, metro, clandesse, monistat, diflucan, tea tree suppositories, gynazole.  You name it, I've tried it.  They all work for a split second, then the symptoms come right back.  I was thinking that my fiance was passing it back to me, but the doctor's say that's impossible.  I find it strange because it only comes back after intercourse.  CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP ME GET RID OF THIS?   I AM SUFFERING.

Thanks :(

I have the same problem with BV coming back despite medical treatment. It does go away for awhile, but returns before my mentral cycle every month like clockwork. It really does cause depression! My husband and I have not been havinbg sex due to the extreme discomfort, and I feel like I am defective or something. I was put on all the same medications that you stated you were taking. This recent time, my doctor gave me a vaginal suppository in addition to all the usual stuff I've used from the past. He said that BV is very common, and to hang in there. He said, age and hormones can cause the large amounts of bacteria (child bearing years in my case) and that It will eventually pass. Then, your bacteria levels will go back to being at a healthy level. SO, that is what I'll pass on to you as well. Just keep doing what your doctor says to, and I wish you the best of luck!

Has your doctor been able to capture a yeast sample and send it in for identification?  With the increased use of otc  yeast treatments, and the stupid design of the 1 and 3 day treatments, there are now many drug resistant yeast critters in our environment.

I urge you to try and find out. Try to find a clinic with in a reasonable distance that deals with vulvo/vaginal problems. Or get your doctor to talk with someone who specializes in these things. General ob/gyn's or physicians don't have the time to keep up on what's the latest thinking all the time. If things are constently returning then you have a 'chronic yeast infection' with bv complications.

Your vaginal immune system is in disarray and needs help. There are treatments out there, you just need to hook up with someone who knows about them and can accurately diagnose you.

Don't use lubes containing alcohol or glycerols. My doc suggested crisco shortening. Safe, won't stick around like oil allowing bacteria to grow, and not too messy.

Do a literature search at the libary or on-line for chronic yeast/bv.  There is a lot of info out there.

Now go bother your doctor and keep us updated!

Thank you for responding.  I am going to talk to my GYN and see where I should go that is a specialist.  I just want it over with.  It scares me when I see tons of posts and articles from women that have been dealing with this type of thing for years....that will really suck.  Thanks again.  I will let you know whatever I find out.

worried- i m sorry your going throughthis too. i have been having the same issues. and i too am getting depressed about it. when reading throughout the forum yesterday a notice some womans issues on this topic were suspeted to be little cuts or tears inside the vagina cuased by friction or not anough luberication during sex, which i think is why my dr. kept telling me to use alot of lube and to take sex very slowly so that i am naturally properly lubed? so did these small tears happen and then i became more suseptable to bv and a yeast infection? maybe but i wonder why my dr. didnt see or tell me abut these small tears? anyway i thought i would give you my latest theroy as related to me. having sex makes me nervous now becuase i expect it to hurt instead of being pleaseureable and that in not good for my head.
