reoccurring yeast infection

by xxt, Sep 13, 2006 12:00AM
I am 47 years old and very active, not over weight, tested negative for diabetes. These infections began about 3 years ago and have gotten progressively worst.  They seem to begin around the time of my monthly cycle and become very intense. Itchy, painful during sex, leaving a grayish discharge on my husbands penis.  I do not have a foul oder or noticable discharge on my panties during the course of the day. I have been to the gyn who can't find anything wrong with me.  Is it possible this is a sign of menopause? My cylcle is now every 22 days instead of 28 days. The only other signs of menopause are headaches occasionally. I have taken fluconazole which works after 3 days of severe painful burning and itching. Then the infection is back again next month.  Over the counter medicines provide minor relief.  What can I do to prevent this painful monthly cycle.  Help!

If you are having reoccuring yeast infections it might be that you aren't treating the right kind of yeast infection.  I have read that 80% of yeast infections are caused by candida albicans (can be treated by monistat or diflucan) and 20% by Candida albrata.  Is it possible that this is your problem?  Also, I too had reoccurring yeast for awhile and dr. ended up prescribing boric acid capsules.  You have to get them at a compounding pharmacy or look up online how to make them yourself.

grayish discharge is also associated with cervicitis, you might want to research that to see if any other symptoms fit you. If so please call ur dr ASAP, i had it for 2 yrs and never knew it until i had my hysterectomy and pathology found it.

For difficult to treat yeast, boric acid suppositories (600mg) 1x a day for 2 weeks can help.   You could also use them like 1x a week or when you first start to feel symptoms to ward off the next one.  If your near menopause, you might also look into low estrogen levels.

Make sure it is yeast first, get it cultured.

I would take it and have it tested too. I know one if my friends kept pssing it back and forth with her husband. Men don't show signs of one. Yet there are many different kinds, so it needs to be tested to see for sure. My friend kept having her treated and it kept comming back.

I had the same problem when I was in my ealry 20's and had to take diflucan once a week for four years to keep it under control. After I had my first child they stopped. Now that I am pg with my 2nd they are back. I am two weeks away from my due date. My doc is going to treat with three days of diflucan and then once a week for two months once the baby is born. I have taken two diflucan so far but don't want to take anymore while pg. They help for a few days then the pain and burn is back. Can't wait to deliver this baby.
I would ask your doctor about taking diflucan for awhile and see if it helps. Just a thought.
Huge hugs! I know how bad this sucks.
