tailbone injury?

by theresa7978, May 09, 2007 12:00AM
I have injured my tailbone twice in my life but never had to seek medical attention. Once was in 1984 and again in 1990. For the past eight months or so, I have had the most painful experience while sitting. It hurts to sit and sometimes hurts to get up. It is sharp and very painful. It is not on the skin or on the muscle. It is directly on my bone at the end of my spine. I gained 100 pounds in 20 months and am now taking steps to lose most of that weight. I included that information because I feel it is important to know that I am 5'8" and went from 170 pounds to 270 pounds. Do you think this is a weight issue or something else?

I don`t have a real answer for you but just wanted to tell you I too fell on my tailbone twice and the second time around I could barely walk for a month and not sit properly for years. The X-ray showed the tailbone was dislocated upward and basically poking into the surrounding tissue. The dislocation remains for good and ever since I could only sit very straight on hard surfaces or else would have the same sharp pains you are describing. I can imagine if you gain an extra 100 pounds, your posture probably shifts and you might put tailbone pressure on tissues that were simply not there before. Just by sitting straight and jogging I kept those pains under control. However, they did come back for a few years after childbirth with 14 hours of back labor (baby face up).
If you start some kind of exercise - except bike riding I bet - I am sure you will find a posture that helps with your pain and if you lose some weight at the same time, it can only help. Good luck with this endeavor. I lterally "feel for you".
