timing of Mirena removal

I know it is best to remove the Mirena during your period, but why is this? and how important is it to remove it during your period? Is it less painful? safer? easier? etc...... I need to have mine removed, and I am not sure I want to wait until my next period. What are the risks of removing it when you are not on your period? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
