when will clomid take effect?

i was put on clomid but i didnt start yet, they gave me 5 50 mg tablets, i was wondering how long will it actually take before i start my period? because i didnt get them in 4 years, the reason they gave me clomid is because they said my ovaries are sleeping, they were asleep for 4 years,and my hormones are imbalanced, wut causes sleeping ovaries anyway?and how long to get my period?
