wild yam/saw palmetto and estradiol birth control interactions

by ees81, Aug 31, 2009 06:49PM
What is the interaction between birth control pills and wild yam/saw palmetto?  Does it render the birth control pill ineffective, or are there strange side effects?  I have been taking wild yam/saw palmetto cocktail as an experiment to see if my breasts increase in size (the answer--it seems so, a little).  However, I am also on Zovia, and the more I read (and it's really HARD to read anything online--thanks to the breast enlargement industry to which I am apparently RAPIDLY FALLING PREY), the more it suggests that wild yam and estradiol contraceptives are not a good pair.

My breasts usually are at their largest (most swollen) the last week of hormone pills, but they were noticeably larger this time around (I've been taking the supplements for 2.5 weeks or so) and a small amount of white liquid oozed from one of my nipples.  I should have my period in a couple of days, so I'll know more conclusively that I am not preggo then (though I surely did immediately take a test--negative).  It seems likely to me that the interaction of the hormone contraceptive and the wild yam could produce this strange symptom (which was VERY brief--I can no longer squeeze anything out and it was never more than a tiny drop).

Don't know the answer, but I do know that when doing IVF, our docs all wanted us to disclose every natural remedy we were takiing.  So there are definitely interactions they don't like.  I'd talk to your gyn.
