I'm an older mama like some of the others who've responded, and for the same reason did not have an amnio. I didn't like the idea of possibly risking an injury to the fetus!

Instead, I had 4 ultrasounds, 2 of which were just to make extra sure that the baby was developing normally. Now there are some questions about the safety of ultrasound, but my boy was born totally healthy and I was glad that I didn't get the amnio. Just so you know there are multiple pathways to check on the baby, not just one way.

Best of luck,

Hi Cara....
I am 41 years old and my beautiful healthy babygirl just turned 1 Nov. 29. I was put thru the mill with this pregnancy and concerns of down syndrome. I was required to go to genetic counseling and I did what was required but refused any test. They tried to convince me to have the amnio done, I refused, this pregnancy was too important to me and I wasnt going to take the risk of m/c associated with amnio. Then they wanted me to take some sort of blood test, but the conditions of that were if any red flags appeared in that test, then I would be required by law to take the amnio, so I refused. I left it in God's hands and I took good care of myself, took my prenatal vitamins, ate right and did my pregnancy exercises. What will be will be and like I told my counselor, doesn't matter what I would find out if i took those test anyways, still going to have my baby and love her unconditionally. (by the way, I had a friend that was preg at 38 and she decided to have all those test done as recommended and was told that she had all the signs of a down syndrome baby and that upset her and stressed her so much she almost lost her baby from stress....and it was for nothing....she had a healthy sweet 8lb baby boy and not one sign of DS or any other type of retardation or physical problems. Good Luck and just take good care of yourself and that baby! :)

it depends on your age

and if you get the AFP test do not freak if it says high risk for downs syndrome.. there is a high rate of false positives for that

usually, its normal for pregnant women to be worried about their baby and how healthy he or she might be. dont worry so much. but you should be checked as you go through the pregnancy. how old are you?

Hi Cara,

How old are you? I am 35 (36 when baby is born). They told me that at 35 it is 1 in 200. every year over it gets higher. I think at 25 it is 1 in 1200.

If you are worried they have CVS testing at around 10 weeks?, and amnio at 16 weeks...they also do a level 2 u/s and a blood screening to try and rule it out.

We did not do the CVS or Amnio due to slight risk of m/c (worked to hard to get pregnant to even slef induce a slight risk, lol)

Try not to worry too much...I know what u mean though.:)
