GM, fluctuance and pus

Some of our medical professional in town think the breast leaking pus is a good sign... sign of healing. Anyone else know anything about this? Any info would be great. Thanks!

Hi, I have no swelling or pus but I am left with a flat hard mass against my chest at the back of my breast, I guess you'd say. & the scarring that's left, by this I mean the colour of my skin around my nipple is dark to light brown & the scar from one of the biopsy's, sometimes it seems that scar seems open? Actually, it is I guess because from time to time I pull of a piece of dried up something and it bleeds a lil. But other than that, nothing else.

thanks for your response.

Is your swelling completely gone and no lumps or pus formation or hardness in your breast?  please let me know.

I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. After my 2 biopsies in 2011, I didn't want to be touched again. I refused any medications. With the biopsies, pus came afterwards. The big lump I had in my left breast leaked after the biopsies, which is good or not, I'm not sure. But the lump itself has remained but has gotten quite a bit flatter and hard on its own without any leaking so I figured whatever was in it re-absorbed into my body? At times, that area is itchy on the inside. I did feel quite a bit of tiredness during the time the lump was swollen & getting smaller, although I'm ok now. I got really sick in May of 2012 (unrelated, I think) ending up in ICU for which whatever it was they never found out. I've never felt better in health since, I haven't had a cold or flu, since (knock on wood). I still have the scarring around my nipple from the IGM. I was diagnosed with IGM. For me, right now, I just say to me or whoever asks, it's just a wait and see thing (for me) because, I can never say for myself that it will never come back. But yes, I didn't want to be touched after the 2nd biopsy & no medications for me. I really wish you well. I wasn't an alcohol or cigarette-free person at the time but am lucky to have had the swelling go down.

Hello All,

Can any help me out pls?

I was diagnosed with Granulomatous mastitis in October 2012 through Biopsy test. Oncology surgeon has put me on steroids - wysolone 10 mg for 45 days.  There is ONLY pus collection and no bacteria in the culture report. I had taken it for 10 days, the abscess or pus started coming out.  Doctor advised I had to go under surgery to remove the pus - lumpectomy. Surgery was done 27th October 2012 and I was on antibiotics and steroids for 7 days.  Complete stitches were remove by 15th November. On 20th November, I could make out pus started from one of the stitches point.  Doctor pressed and tried to remove the pus, finally blood started coming. He had advised to come to checkup on 26th November. in this period 2-3 days, little pus with blood was coming out...then last 2 days it stopped. I could feel the swelling in the upper layer of the breast.  When I met the doctor, he asked me to get the scanning done, aspiration was done to remove the pus which was around 5 ml....that pus was sent to lab.  Lab report came saying no TB cells are present. But again it's a PUS and then he put me on steroids for 30 days.  After 30 days, the hardness area become soft with pus collection. He drained out the pus just by pressing and couldn't completely, every alternate day I used to go for dressing and pus was collecting and coming......again got the  hardness again in 2 places now.  Doctor is asking me to go for surgery again.... Please advise.  I'm really tensed and scared of this.. and he is not sure that this will not reoccur again.

thank you so much...waiting for your response

Hi. From what I got from the internet, GM is a rare form of Erythema Nodosum. The skin around my knees were inflamed along with little lumps behind and below the knees. Also, the soles of my feet and palms were achey and still today, my feet are oddly achey. There was a small area at the corner of my palm/hand where is would be very sore, almost an arthritis feeling I might be able to compare it to, I've never had arthritis. I woke up one night and boy, did it ever bother the heck outta me, I tried not to move and when I did, lots of pain from that little area!
Ten days before my knees turned red, I had sraped my knees up pretty good, we thought infection settled in from the scrapes. I was put on an antiboitic called Septra. After numerous visits to emerge in the whole week I took Septra, I was finally diagnosed with Erythema Nodosum in my legs. Erythema Nodosum reacts to Septra and went off of it right away. By the last day of Septra, I swore I was gonna be dead soon. I felt that bad. Day after discontinuing Septra, I was feeling so much better and could walk easily without limping or pain in my legs and feet.
Before the end of July this year, I had none of these symptoms! I was healthy. Although, once last year, in the spring, I had a breast infection. Same exact area where it started this year and where the lump formed. That time I saw the doctor and day after, the redness and lump went away. Have also had on-going unexplained lower back pain since about that time as well.

Anyway, tc! Wishing you well.

I'm glad you are doing better!! and it's true we most keep the faith on because our family needs us.
I wanted to asked about erythema nodosum, it was just your legs and knees or all of your joints? I had something similar last december but all the Dr.'s said was caused by some strong antibiotics, I wounder if that is part of GM disease?
I hope the best to you! keep getting better ;-) and nice meeting you

Hi, hello. Sorry to hear what you're going through. At the moment, my breast is looking better but I am scared of more pain returning. I would like to change my diet and get healthier in hopes it will help but change is not easy. I'm still leaking a little pus although my breast lump seems smaller and colour of pus changed from orange-ish to yellow-ish and not feeling so much pain now. Can put some pressure on my breast without hurting, accidental, of course. Since pain, I've tried my best not to bang or have anyth touch it.
Being sick is not good, not good at all. I have kids too and at the moment, tiredness is what I'm dealing with along with a little depression.
The one week I got really sick not long ago with breast and knees/legs (Erythema Nodosum) problems, I was thinking I had some sort of fast acting cancer and thought I was going to be gone in no time (bef my diagnosis). That was awful. I thought about what in life was so much more important (my kids, family, etc.) and what I took for granted. Before GM, I didn't like my breasts.. I'm a b cup and was a little embarrassed about that but that no longer bothers me, after GM. If I lost my breast, it would be a very hard adjustment but welcome relief from the pain and just happy I would have my life and my children to watch grow.
I wish you luck and hope you get better and would be great if we all could heal from this.

I have GM and my breast drain even from the sides of the nipple (my skins opens) I drain once or twice a month since June 2010 and is getting worse My Dr. told me that the drainning is caused by the tissue inflamation and I don't think it's a good sign at all.

Hi -

Yes, same thing.  And yes it can provoke your breast, as can anything disturbing the breast.  That is why it needs to be done very carefully.  Doing it under ultrasound allows the doctor to see exactly where the masses are, and how and where to direct the needle.

It sounds like your mass is more solid.  Every woman is different, collections can be very large and fluid and this method then provides much relief.

I personally found that if I let an abcess burst on its own, the channel would stay open and leaking for weeks, whereas if I had a draining early on, the collection would clear up quickly.

Some women manage their breasts on their own, with healing clay, etc., and seem to have good success.

Is this what is called aspiration? If so, I've had it done 3 times with not much collected and no, no ultrasound with those, either.:( I've drained some of it on my own by squeezing it slightly and will drain on its own also. I've only been poked a total of 5 times for biopsy's and aspirations since this started but I'm already getting tired of this poking and fearing the next one. My first biopsy was extremely painful and a very bad experience. And also left wondering if the insertion of needles can actually makes things worse??

Hi, thanks. What is 'collections drained under ultrasound' mean? Can you explain to me what this is. I haven't heard of this and would be great to know.

Hi there:

I think I may have answered this question a bit in my last post to you.

My own unprofessional opinion, gathered from my own experience, and that of the women sharing their stories and treatment histories and outcomes on this forum, is that the draining is not necessarily a good sign, but not necessarily bad either.  I think it is a symptom of the major inflammatory process that the breast is involved in with GM.

The 'pus' is generally just cellular debris from your bodies immune system cells fighting whatever they perceived to be a foreign invader in the breast.  When this debris builds up, the 'abcess' that now develops from this fluid often grows to quite a large size, and will often 'channel' (form a route) to the surface of the breast.   Generally, as a patient, you will notice an area on the breast surface that becomes thinner, darker (mine would look like a bruise initially), and then spontaneously burst through the surface.  Initially you will feel a lot of pain relief as this happens - anyone who has ever had a tooth abcess will understand the relief once the pressure built up by the inflammation is relieved.

However, to me this is just a symptom of the inflammatory process going on, so not sure why it is seen as positive.  But I am not a doctor.

The sinusing can become quite involved and really take over the breast.

Many of us here have had good result with having our collections drained under ultrasound, before they can become complicated and before they develop a channel to the breast surface.  One advantage of this method is that you are not left with a scar.  Also, my own experience and that of other patients is that if an abcess is left to form to the point where it does form a channel (I have had three experiences of this) - the channel will generally take some time to heal and will leave a scar.  There is also the risk of secondary infection from any open area.

Does this answer your question?

When an abcess does come through on its own and burst - which can sometimes happen quite quickly and can't be avoided - it can be very scary.  There are many posts here about how to best deal with this on this forum, however if you have any questions, just ask us.

Wishing you all healing, Jo

I am not sure if that is true.  But it seems like if the pus is draining out of the body, that it is a way for the body to help heal itself.  If you are feeling better while the leaking is happening, then it sounds like a good thing.  If I find out information about this subject, I will let you know.
