I second everything Gadgets told you and would like to add I'm on 4000 IU D3 to maintain or raise my levels and I go in next week to see where my level are at.
Cholicalciferol is also know as Vitamin D3 as apposed to Ergocalciferol which is Vitamin D2. mobyjoby in the USA the D3 is over the counter and is found in stregnths of 5,000iu and less and is a daily supplement. The D2 is only by prescription and comes in 50,000iu orally. Usally only taken once or twice a week.
Is your level of 15 in ng/ml or nmol/l? It does make a difference. Both are in the severly deficient range at the level, but the nmol/l is super severly deficient. With my time on this site I have not seen anyone on as high a dose as you have been prescribed for D3. When I first started by level was 11ng/ml. My doctor prescribed D2 50,000iu weekly, after about a year of that dose and still not getting my numbers to optimum levels he added D3 2,000iu (at my insistance from my research here).
I would really question your doctor's instructions. You are your best advocate. Are you his/her first adult diagnosis of VDD? Maybe there is an underlying issue that requires this high of dose? Some absorption issue in your GI tract? Don't feel bad questioning your doctor's decision?
BTW I am currently on 5,000iu of D3 daily to maintain my levels. I go in next month to be tested to see if I am able to keep my levels up at that dose.
Wow. That seems like a lot! My vitamin D level was 20 and I was prescribed 10,000 I.U. of D3 per day for 6 weeks then retested. I went from a level of 20 to 85 in that time period on that dose. I'm now on 2000 I.U. per day to maintain my levels.
