i thought i was going mad

I am 31 yrs old and have spent most of my life with this yawning for air problem , as early as 6/7 it started it is becoming a real problem , can anyone help ?

Please read about Hiatal Hernia.

Some of the symptoms on this forum sound familiar to mine and I hope my story helps.

I have had shallow breathing, yawning and shortness of breath, but already know that mine is from a hiatal hernia that was diagnosed after going to the ER three times with chest pains.  It began years before with occasional heartburn and has caused many health problems.  I take a proton pump inhibitor to control the reflux that the hernia causes.  There is not really anything else I can do except I am learning what to eat and what not to eat.  I have stopped drinking soda which has helped considerably.  I ate chili with beans the other day and am suffering again.  

Most of the Dr.'s I have gone to write it off because it is a small hiatal hernia...but it causes alot of symptoms.  I had a GI scope and it was not seen then, but only months later during a chest CT exploring for aortic dissection (which it was not).  For me weight loss will help even more, but I know people that are not overweight that have one.  I have joined the gymn to get this under control.

I know what everyone means about Dr.'s saying it's anxiety.   Many did say this to me also, but it certainly does not make this condition better, so please keep anxiety levels low.  I hope this helps someone!  :-)

I'm a 28 year old healthy male and I have the EXACT same thing, the whole can't get that fulfilling breath of air feeling. I've had it since I was younger but it would always go away on it's own. But for almost a month now it hasn't gone away, I'm constantly trying to catch my breath, yawning use to work but now even that isn't helping much these days, I went for a chest X-ray last week, waiting for the results. Doc gave me a puffer, didn't work. My chest is so sore to the touch because I'm breathing so heavily and I also suffer from anxiety which in turn is making the situation alot worse. What does help though is knowing I'm not the only one dealing with this ********

I am 23 years old and in 2008 was in an accident. The summer after the accident I began experiencing difficulty taking a deep (fullfilling) breath...No matter how deep I breathed, I would not feel like I got enough air. I felt like I had to yawn, then couldn't yawn. When I was able to effectively yawn, I got the deep breath I was waiting for. I have had breathing tests done to check for asthma, which said I had above average breathing. So the condition wasn't asthma. I feel like the condition comes around when I am under stress. I have been on anti-anxiety meds which didn't seem to help. I have tried 'stress relief' techniques (however, my doctors have never been able to give me any I had to research and find them on my own). Once they problems with breathing start it lasts for hours, even days. It is frustrating and causes more anxiety and that causes the problem to get worse, or at the very least, not get any better.
I am going to Convienient care in the morning, because I have been sitting here all night trying to breath effectively and can't. My chest often begins to hurt in the center from trying too hard to take a deep breath. I am usually ok first thing when I wake up, but within a couple hours they have started up. They can be minimal or so bad I can't concentrate on anything.
I have seen postings and forums on here and was hoping someone coule give me some answers. Any information Dr.s have given. I don't care if the problem is anxiety, I would like something to help cure it or at least treat. When you feel like you can't breath, you can't sleep and I am lucky if I get to sleep within an hour after taking a sleeping Pill.
I don't take any medication regularly and I am cutting caffeine from my diet. Problems have not decreases from my perspective.

You don't give enough information here. Is yawning your only symptom? Then perhaps you  should try getting more sleep. There are different reasons people yawn. Some yawn because their bodies need more oxygen, especially when we are tired. Others yawn out of stress. And some yawn while over breathing, also known as chronic hyperventilation.
