Purple toes and Ears

I'm 57 years old and beginning a year ago during very cold weather (35degrees with wind) I noticed my toes, fingetips, and part of nose had truned purple.  Now, during cold weather again, the same thing is happening.  It's really severe color, looking almost like frostbite.  What is more worrysome is when they take blood, the blood clots, suggesting cold agglutin.  Even a hot bath will not work to keep it from clotting, I had to go to a hospital where they had tubes with a chemical in them to prevent clotting.

Do these symtoms suggest anything to anyone?  I don't feel physically too bad.

This discussion is related to purple hands purple feet in 14 yr old daughter.

Of course I'm discussing it with my doctor, but as of yet, it's undiagnosed.  What I was hoping was to get information to present to him and others that would suggest a range of possibilities so we don't get it wrong.  I need a specialist to look at this because what concerns me most is the fact the blood clots when drawn.

That is not good.  Can you help?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Well, cold weather does constrict your blood vessels and lack of oxygen causes bluish discoloration. However if the temperature is maintained indoors, this should not be happening.
Possibilities of diabetes, hypothyroidism, and Raynaud’s phenomenon should be ruled out. A lower blood pressure too makes the blood sluggish and increases the chance of clot formation.
Please discuss this with your doctor.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

How is your vitamin K level?  Are you avoiding grapefruit?  How's your iron level?  Your prothrombin time?

Did anyone ever suggest Raynaud's disease?

If they didn't recommend aspirin or something else for clotting, what about taking something over the counter, such as flaxseed oil capsules, which have a mild anti-coagulant effect on the platelets?  They are high in omega fatty acids and even if they don't help your clot problem, they are good for mood and inflammation.  I don't recommend taking it to late in the day though, because for me it can cause a lot of dreams.  I take it twice a day myself typically - with breakfast and mid-day meal.
