Partically Detached Retina - No insurance...

Not sure if anyone can really be of help where I am at, but a few years ago I was diagnosed with a partially detached retina.  I've been without insurance for years, was on it when i was still with my parents, but @ 25, I work but can't afford insurance.  Anyway, I managed to get a new pair of glasses about a month ago and the dr. showed me my retina pics and what it looked like.  There is a tear, that is evident, the other eye there is a bubble or something in it...

Anyway I've been calling around to places hoping to get a payment plan and so far the one receptionist i spoke with is able to get me in for $200 down and $50 per month, which for now is kinda do-able, until I am unemployed in May.  I need to call her back and find out if that is for the initial appointment or with a surgery......

*sign of the times, eh?*

Anyway I was wondering if anyone can give me suggestions as to what do.  I just called the United Way and got a number to a place that maybe able to help.  I am in NE Ohio, Lake County to be slightly more specific.

Thanks!

contact your local lion's club, knights templar, or services/commision for the blind. All have resources to help the financially needy pay for medically necessary eye surgery, including follow-up visits and a new pair of glasses after surgery.

Also, you should know that small retinal detachments, especially in the bottom of the retina, can frequently be observed for years without getting worse.  Further, it sounds like you don't need major surgery inside the eye in a hospital, but possibly laser surgery in the office to weld down the retina and prevent the tear from getting worse.

In addition to looking for help from outside supporters, you can ask to "pay the medicare rate" for any treatments.  Most offices will be more likely to give you a cash-pay-up-front discount than to give you a discount AND a payment plan.
