I have been reading your posts about neuropathic pain and herpes. I got vaginal herpes over 10 yrs ago from my ex husband (hence, the ex). For the first 6 months or so, I got outbreaks every month with my period. They went away after that for many years until I was pregnant and got one outbreak early on in the pregnancy and nothing since. I got the prodromal neuropathic pain prior to the oubreak (feeling as if my skin was sunburned and being slapped) in my vaginal area.
I cant remember how long its been, at least 5 years now, that I get occasional ( every 6 months or so) neuropathic pain on my right thigh. It comes in times of stress and I have called it my "stress gauge" I have not had a herpes outbreak with this symptom. I learned to ignore it and have tied it together with the herpes from over 10yrs ago However...
In the past 5 yrs, I have developed new symptoms which may or may not be related. I have transient numbness to both hands (NOT carpel tunnel after 4 electrophysiology tests have proved this) MRI is negative.
Here is where it gets fun.
For the past 1.5 weeks the neuropathic "slapped sunburn, burning, occasionally jabbing hot poker pain" has returned. Except now its in my left side/abdomen and around to the back. The previous pain usually resolved after 3 days. Its been 1.5 weeks and I have had to resort to T#3s, Ibuprofen to now naproxen and a trial of gabapentin (hasnt worked yet but its only been a day). I dont THINK I have a have a herpes outbreak. Strange to say, but I have a sore rectum that I thought was first a hemorrhoid but after a week of piercing poops (sorry for the graphics) I took a look in the mirror and it looks to be a little cracked skin or a tear. ?Could have been a sore???
I know that without a doubt this is neuropathic pain. I have read over and over that neuropathic pain like this is not caused by vaginal herpes and only shingles causes this pain. I have never had shingles. So...my thought is that people may not ever want to tell their doctors that they have had genital herpes so maybe its not a widely documented occurrence. After all, what the heck else can it be? ALL my bloodwork is negative for MS, sarcoidosis. Neurologist is baffled, GP is baffled, I think its the herpes.
