muscle fasiculation post discectomy

by exit, Apr 22, 2007 12:00AM
Approximately 5 months after microdiscectomy l5,s1 for ruptured disc, I developed muscle fasiculations in affected leg with muscle cramping. The twitching can be seen below the knee all the time. The muscle cramps occur usually below knee with the foot locked and difficult to place foot flat. This is very painful until I place foot flat. I am awaken from sound sleep and have broken a couple of teeth due to pain and clinching my jaw until I can stop cramp. I had MRI around 8 months post-op-no significant findings. I had EMG  about a year post surgery and showed neuropathy both legs worse on affected leg. I am now 3 years post surgery and continue to have fasiculations and muscle cramps that occur 5-6 times a month. What advise can you offer?

I have had the same surgery and the same symptoms; I am over 4 years post-op.  I know it is related to my surgery because I do not take any prescription drugs other than the one I take to help with the cramping.  It is not a cure and my calf will still have a tremoring kind of spasm but....it does eliminate the awful pain and contortion of my foot.  I have been thrown to the floor on a couple of occasions trying to put weight on my foot when I have a cramp.  Like you, it usually awakes me in the middle of the night but I think it occurs when I turnover or stretch.  I it also trigger by swimming and fatique.  Negative MRI's and a surgeon who thought it might be all in my head...He finally suggested that I try Quinine Sulfate 200mg.  I don't think it is recommended for the treatment of cramps but it works!  I started taking it at bedtime every night but have cut back and I only take it when I feel the intense cramps coming on.  A Rx for 90 capsules has lasted since 7/06.  Maybe this medication would help you...I don't even want to think about how I would manage without it!
