Shingles with no rash

My husband has had severe back pain that has transfered down his left leg and is in his thigh. His back does not hurt as much now, but, his leg is killing him. He cannot walk down the stairs without a lot of pain. He has been out of work for 2 weeks and he enjoys what he does. It is more internal than external. It does not hurt to the touch like many cases of shingles, you cannot touch the skin. There is no rash. Could this be shingles or maybe a pinched nerve. It clearly has to do with the nerves. We have been to a Neurosurgeon and he said there is nothing structurally wrong with the back. Although, he has had back problems in the past. Could this be shingles? How does one diagnose it?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Low back ache going down one leg is not due to shingles but a pinched nerve, commonly known as sciatica. This can be diagnosed by a MRI and nerve conduction study. Discuss this with a neurologist. Take care!
