Back pain with tingling, occasionally pulsating, in right leg

by Mimi8, Jun 07, 2007 12:00AM
I am a 51-yr-old female with a history of a herniated disk at L5-S1, for which I had a lumbar microdiskectomy (to remove pieces of the disk which were compressing nerves and causing significant burning pain) done in June of 2006.  Since that time, I have noticed some numbness in my outer three toes on my right foot, which I have been told can be a side effect of my injury or surgery.  I had gained approximately 30 pounds since the time of my surgery, but then lost the weight and I am continuing to lose weight.  I am now "eating right" and exercising regularly.  I am trying to build core strength and stabilize muscles to alleviate stress on my back.  I have just started meeting with a personal trainer (trained in sports med) who will help design an exercise program, taking into consideration my back issues.  I sometimes go for periods of time with little to no back symptoms.  However, my occupation requires daily driving, which definitely aggravates my back.  Long periods of standing or walking up inclines do the same.  I also notice that certain exercises result in discomfort and pain in my lower, right back (where my disk was herniated, "heaviness" in my right leg, and occasional tingling in my right, front calf.  If I had to guess, I would say that the disk is bulging in the same area or that it has been re-herniated (at least, that's what it feels like).  I participated in a "Body Flow" class (combination of Pilates, Yoga & Tai Chi) on Tuesday night and I believe the yoga poses did something to irritate this same area in my back.  I can usually do Pilates, with modifications, with little to no problems.  Since this class, I have noticed that the tingling in my right, front calf is occasionally accompanied by a "pulsating" sensation.  What does this sound like?  Is it worth going back to the neurologist for a repeat MRI?  The last time I went for a follow up, he said it was relatively normal, although there was the expected "thinning" of the disk in the area where he had removed the pieces of disk and some degeneration, due to aging.
