What is moderate hypertension

My husband is 60, his BP has always been normal, however, int he last few months it has been a bit unstable, his last reading was 180/100. Is this considered to be high or moderately high?  He is a non smoker, slightly overweight, and exercises regularly.

If the usual resting pulse pressure is consistently greater than 40 mmHg, such as 60 or 80 mmHg, there is a high likelihood the basis is stiffness of the major arteries, aortic regurgitation (a leak in the aortic valve), arteriovenous malformation.

A high resting pulse pressure is harmful and tends to accelerate the normal aging of body organs, particularly the heart, the brain and kidneys.

The recent guidelines published by the medical community advises to have the pressure lower than 120/80.  It certainly is considered high, and the pulse rate is high as well.  Pulse rate is systole (180) minus diastole (100) is greater than 60.  That usually indicates there is hardening of the system's vessels.

Your husband should consult with his doctor for therapy to manage his blood pressure.
