Complicated issure

A friend of mine has times of memory loss, irrational thinking processes, loss of motor skills and the reasoning skills. This does not happen all the time but when it does his lack of speech, and the other problems listed are very apparent. He does not loosed bladder control when this state happens. He also looses the sense of his surroundings and is very much focused on achieving on task is he is trying to perform some sort of task. He's had full blood work, EKG, MRI and CT scans performed without any abnormality. He does not have any liver or renal problems. His pulmonary tests have shown no abnormalities. His urine and stool output is normal. Also when he is in this state he becomes very, very confused and is unable to fully communicate with anybody. My friend has been seen by multiple neurologist’s psychiatrists and neurosurgeons while being hospitalized a half a dozen times for this condition. Bye the why the condition does not leave any noticeable neurological repercussions and the episodes last for approximately 2-3 hours when he is in this state after that he is totally fine and functioning in a normal state. His neurological ghant and flexibility is normal also. He has been struck by lightning approximately 12 years ago and had been diagnosed with PTSD that occurred during his military service of 13 years and he has also been diagnosed with depression. He does not take any drugs other than what the doctors have prescribed but he is a recovering alcoholic for the past 11 years.

You didn't give an age . . . the symptoms sound like a misfolding prion/protein neurodegenerative disease (ND) like Alzheimer's.    Or early onset Alzheimer's if he is under age 65.    These diseases are a national epidemic.   Another prion disease possibility is Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease.
Or he may be suffering Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome from his alcoholism.

Alheimer's is a prion disease:

Neurological symptoms that come and go, if both structural (tumor, necrotic tissue) , circulatory (including spasming of blood vessels) and seizure disorders are ruled out, the problem may be due to infections, particularly from prions or from a retro-virus (HERV-W). Not all of the infectious agents have been identified. These infectious disease are extremely difficult to identify, and are often progressive.

Differential diagnosis is difficult. If symptoms are relieved by prednisone, lean toward a flare up of an infectious entity.

Certain medications (Lipitor, for example) can cause loss of memory.
