Irritable laryngospasms.

by 520jamers, Jun 03, 2007 12:00AM
Hello,
I have had irritable laryngospasms for the past 6 years and have been treated with botox injections, PPI, and Ativan.  They initially thought it was vocal dysphonia but the spasms totally occlude the airway at times and cause me to "pass out".  I am getting really concerned that it could be caused by something else but I don't know what. This originally started with exposure to a fly spray for my horses.  Could you give me some direction to try to find out what is the cause.  I have researched GERD and I am wondering if that is a possiblity.  Please help.  I am getting really desperate.  I have been told that the vocal dysphonia won't kill me but the choking makes me feel otherwise. My voice doesn't change or get raspy or breathy as I would expect from the dysphonia. Some of the times I am treated like this is hysteria and I wonder if I can cause laryngospasms with hysteria.  Please, I am open to any suggestions.  This has totally changed my life and I can't go places with fumes, cleansers, car exhaust or pesticides.  I have tried to go back to work, not as a nurse anymore, but as a transcriptionist for the hospital.  But with carpet cleaners, cleaning supplies, car exhaust, pesticides to kill the every growing mosquitoe problem I have started the spasms again.  If  stay in my controlled environment I seem to be almost spasm free.  Any and all suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you

Hi,

I know how you feel, I have had them myself for many years. They diagnosed me with severe larngospasms and vocal cord paralysis. I was treated with ventolin , but also heliox which is helium mixed in with oxygen. This is used when the airways is very constricted. I have been intubated and almost had a trache cold turkey, which literally scared me to death! I had tried acid reflux meds and a muscles relaxant, which felt it was doing the opposite.

I have resorted to resting my voice alot and no clearing of the throat as much as possible. I am careful too what things I eat. I also added supplementation to increase my immune system , which was the best thing I did. Things like omega-3, grapeseed extract, antioxydents and minerals that contain magnesium which helps relax the muscles. It just seemed like the right thing to do.
