Spitting Blood

Within the past week when I awake in the mornings i've been spitting blood, at first it was small amounts but it's casually gotten thicker to contain more blood.  It doesn't appear to be coming from my gums, and i've not recently been sick in any way.  I was just wondering where to start with what this could be?

Well - now we know. After a doctor visit my daughter was diagnosed with enlarged tonsils and adenoids.  The recommended initial treatment by her pediatrician is a two week regemine of Rhinocort.  If that does not help we'll visit the ENT specialist.

My daughter had the same persistant cough for years, even on vacations to Hawaii, and Arizona. That helped us rule out allergies in the home. She was medicated with everything under the sun then finally at 6yrs, right after Kindergarten let out for the summer she had her tonsils, and adnoids removed. The doctor was so amazed at the size, he had them put into a container to show us!!! She has been cough free, beside the regular cold/cough, ever since. Good luck.

Coughing up blood is known as hemoptysis. Hemoptysis often looks frothy because it is mixed with air and sputum.  If your not coughing at all, it might be your throat and/or sinus. Small membranes in the nose and throat can rupture causing blood streaked mucus/spit due to many things, some as simple as over-dryness. Try a humidifier and put a little vaseline in your nostrils at night for a few days along with drinking extra water during the day.
If that doesn't help, check with an ENT and possibly a dentist to rule out things like infections, allergies, and/or mouth causes.

Hemoptysis is not normal!!!!
Blood-stredked sputum is often occurs in minor upper respiratory infections.  More profuse bleeding may indicated Aspergillus infection, lung abcess, TB, or bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer)!!!

Please do not put Vaseline in your nose. Petroleum based products like Vaseline can lead to a rare but difficult to treat lipoid pneumonia.   Its important for you to see your doctor especially since this is a new symptom that he or she will need to check into further and it good to get it documented for your medical file.
