Pilonidal cyst

My 16 year old discovered a sore on her lower back. It was diagnosed as a pilonidal cyct and we were sent to a general surgeon. The surgeon informed me she would make a 2 inch incision to remove the "sac", it was an " in and out operation". the next day when the bandages were removed I discovered she had cut her from the top of the buttocks to her anus...removing all the flesh, muscle, fuscia( several in inches wide) exposing the spine. That day she began hemoraging and was rushed by ambulance to a larger hospital.  Is this the normal procedure for such a cyst? It has been 7 months and the area has not yet healed completely.
