90yr old Stroke

My neighbor whom I'm very close to sufford a basil stroke (the kind in the center of the brain) on oct 29th 2006. He is 90 but has soo much more to live for.  He isn't on a ventalator and he responds when people talk to him(moving his left arm and leg and right side of his jaw, he is parilized on the right side and cannot speak), all his organs are working and his lungs are clear.  But he's still hemoraging.  There is no feeding tube, should there be one or is this just prolonging hell for him and everyone involved???  We all want to make the right decition and I am very close with this family and writing on their behalf, I have spent time with him in hospital, and just want to know if there is hope for a 90 yr old man after such prolonged hemeraging and swelling on the brian??? He's been bleading for 5 days and counting. How long does it take to stave to death?  He is hydrated.

Hello Goodneighbor, my dad 85 had the same stroke on Aug.15th 2006. Does the man sleep all day? My dad did and they said he needed food, so we had to put a G-tube (feeding tube)There is so much to do and such a long time to recover. My dad was in ICU for 4 weeks and LT care one for 5 weeks and now 2 weeks in a rehab. I'm glad he's there and the rehab is great, but the nurses is something else to speak of which all I can say in 3 days of there care my dad breaks down into 2-butt bed sores, for 9 weeks none. It all depends on the beds they sleep on and how many times they roll him on his sides. In this place he lays on his back from morning to night or sits in his wheel chair from 10am to 5 pm. not checking for BMS, My family is going nuts, we are bring him home cause I feel we can take better care of him 24/7 Good luck to your friend, make sure he gets turned and checked his butt, tell family to lotion everything and bath him often and take to all doctors and ask alot of questions , Good luck, remember, its all baby steps now. Your message made me remember my dad's last days.  No one knows in these situation, but my guess is your dear old friend may not be here much longer.  Find some time alone with him and tell him everything you want to tell him NOW.  Urge each family member to do the same.  Nothing left unsaid.  No regrets.

Hey! I just got back from hanging with my little 101 year old pal in the park. She was all smiles! She is walking and talking and just last week learned to tell time! Guess what. She was paralyzed, unable to move or recognize anyone or respond and one day away from a feeding tube when I intervened. She has an excellent quality of life and loves to watch "Judging Amy".  This fellow is ONLY 90? Don't give up!
