On a temporary basis your physician has several drug options to reduce saliva. You are correct in worrying about the potential for the saliva compromising the airway. The worst thing is that the cough reflex, which would normally clear the trachea, may be absent. They have an electircal stimulation device, available under the supervision of s stroke/swallowing specialist, that has has some success in the studies. You need to get a consult with an M.D. who is a specialist in swallowing disorders. I have several suggestions to develop that reflex, but instead of following those as a first choice an M.D. swallow specialist consult is in order as of yesterday.

Hi, Caretaker.  What are your suggestions for developing that reflex?  My husband doesn't choke on saliva or have trouble eating, but his swallowing isn't as efficient as it was before his fall.  Sometimes saliva or even a bit of chewed up food drips from his mouth.  (Actually, he didn't drool after his stroke, only after the fall.)
