Alkaline Phosphate Level in 2 yr olds

by ChanaAdair, Aug 15, 2003 12:00AM
I have a 2 year that was hospitalized for taking her brothers medicine while with the babysitter a few weeks a go. During her hospital stay they ran a lot of tests to make sure there were no ill effects from this happening. On her lab tests her alkaline phosphates came back extremely high which the doctor says would not be a side effect of this medicine(Risperdal). They ran another lab to be sure with the same results. The doctor then decided to do a cat scan of her kidneys and liver and intestines, etc. He said he saw nothing suspicious that the next step would be Childrens Hospital. I asked  him how high were her levels and he said they are several times higher than they should be and we have to find out what is causing this. Today they are doing another lab at my request to see what they level is once again. I am extremely worried as is her father what this could mean. I have every form of cancer almost in my family along with Hodgkins disease and other things. I am most worried about this being a form of bone cancer or the onset of Hodgkins due to fact these seem to be the problems that plague some of the youth in my family. Should I be worried about this at all and what is the average level (acceptable) for children that are 2 years old?

My son was hospitalized and while there they did lots of blood work and the alkaline phosphate level came back fairly high also. The Doctor ordered to retake it and it was still high.  He then had it taken again and along with that he asked the lab to check the level of Vitamin D and a few other things.  All that stuff came back normal... so he is going to wait 3 months and check it agian.  He told me that it is sometimes common for the level to be high in kids.

I think after reading your letter that maybe it's high in alot of kids.. that it was just found with ours because of the hospital stay and more blood work.

Good luck and hope all goes well.  He did also tell me that if it was still high that he was going to do the x-ray or CTscan of his wrist or knee.. to check the bone growth I guess.  I am going to check out the page the other writer sent you.

Again good luck.
