My HCG levels are not doubling

by ashley81984, Jan 29, 2005 12:00AM
My name is Ashley and I am a couple of weeks pregnant.  I have had 3 blood tests done within a week and a half, and my hCG is not doubling like it should be.  I got blood done on January 20th and it was 1505, and I got it done again on January 27th and it was only 1630.  What could be wrong?  My doctor has told me that it could either be a blighted ovum or and ectopic(tubal) pregnancy, but I have not had any signs or symptoms of either one of those.  I had an ultrasound done, and it showed the sac, but I am not far along enough to see if there is anything in the sac.  What should I do, and why is my hCG not doubling?

I know how stressful this can be because I went through something similar last year.  Try to remain calm until you are sure.  Typically HCG numbers should double every 2-3 days, but they don't always "double".  However, it seems like they should be rising more than yours are.  Exactly how far along are you and what made them do the blood test?  Are you scheduled for another ultrasound?  I would think that would be the next step...to have an u/s when you should be able to see more.

They are not sure how far along I am, but on Thursday, they did see the sac that the baby is supposed to grow in.  The doctor said that I am not far along enough to see if anything is in the sac.  I go back on Monday to see what my test results are from Thursday 27th and today Saturday 29th.

Go to this web-site for some additional support.  http://home.earthlink.net/~misdiagnosed

You are way to early to tell what is going on.  Sometimes dehydration can make the numbers go down.  We have seen many women on the web-site above come out okay with levels that did not progress according to textbook.  I wish you well with everything.

I wouldn't just go on the numbers; LOTS of things could be going on; dehydration (like the previous post said) or a vanishing twin, etc. My first set of numbers were taken when I was 5-6 weeks, and they were much lower (120's) and did not double the first time (they did later). Now I'm 21 wks with a baby girl. I agree that it may just be too early to tell what will happen, and I know its easier said than done, but try to relax and don't do anything drastic until you are sure. It seems like a lot of women who have posted on this forum get a little prematurely pushed into D&C's over a set of numbers.

I found out today(9/19/07) that I was 6 weeks pregnant. They could not find a heartbeat. On Sunday my hormone levels were at 10,000. Today they did the same blood tests and my levels only went up to 12,400. Please can anyone shed some light on this situation and give me some kind of hope.

Ashley, don't stress yourself out over it. I got my 1st HCG level on December 21st, it was 586, December 25th it was 1422 and on December31st it had only gone up to 1830. I was SO worried about a blighted ovum or maybe a miscarriage in the process, BUT today I went to the doctor and had a ultrasound done. Not only did I find out I was only 6 weeks 4 days pregnant, but we also saw and heard the heartbeat!!!!! I stressed out so much and worried over nothing. Just have faith and pray that everything will be ok. Just rememer what may be "normal" for one pregnancy may not be normal for you.

I am 6 wks and they think I have a non-viable pregnancy.  I went in for an hcg quant. and it was 119 at 5wks and then 6 days later went up to 272.  However, we had an ultrasound the same day and you could see a sac and yolk sac and everything was in the right place.  My fertility doc said that it is not going to be a viable pregnancy and I need to make a decision about a D&C.  My normal OB said to wait and do another ultrasound at the end of this week.  Can anyone help?  I have had 2 prior miscarriages and am in shambles thinking this is going to be a third.

I would wait and have another ultrasound. I would not rush into having a D&C done. Good luck to you-I wish you the best!

I am suppose to be about 10 weeks pregnant according to the first day of my last period. I went to the dr last week for a first ultra sound and they couldnt find a heart beat and they said that the sac was smaller than nine weeks. So i went to the dr. the next day and they drew blood and said that my hcg was 21000 so they should definately be able to see something, so i just went back today for another ultra sound and they said that there is a sac but no baby. so the dr. wants me to wait about a week and half and come back for another ultra sound to see if there are any changes. If there arent he wants to do a D&C but i have had no cramping and no bleeding so I want to wait. Has this happend to any one or does anyone have any advice for me?

I am 6 weeks after 1st IVf.  My first HCG was 540 then 1280 and then 1984 2 days later.  I had severe hyperstimulation and had an emergency draining.   Could my hyperstimulation have affected the levels?  I am very worried and going for my u/s on Monday. .
