Baby's sunburn

by blondie72, Apr 09, 2005 12:00AM
I posted in the Open Forum about my 7 month old being out in the sun.  Well his little face and head are pretty red.  I feel so bad about this.  Like I said though I don't ever seem to think about it being really hot when it is still a little chilly outside.  Is there anything special I should do since he is only a baby???  He does not seem to be out of sorts or cranky or anything.  Will aloe be enough.  I looked at babycenter.com and they recommend seeing a pedi anytime a baby under a year old gets a sunburn.   It does not seem serious but I wonder if any of you were stupid like me and let your kids get a little burn.  Thank you so much for your help.

I was going to suggest aloe, but your already on to that   I would just make sure he has lots of fluids, Is there blisters or anything like that???  In Canada we have a health line to call I dont know If you guys have anything like that. But I cant imagine them doing anything else unless it was a severe burn.

I had sun stroke once NOT FUN  went into convulsions and the whole bit had to be hospitalized and basically all they did was give me sugar water to make sure I kept fluids in and electrolytes in balance. Now I blistered and all that.

I have a little baldie and Im sure I will be faced with sunburn this summer too. Its easy to get burnt I am fair and about 10-15 mins out in sun does it.Even the wind sometimes can burn

P.S. Your not stupid...... love ya........

No he is not blistered (at least not yet)  I kept a cool wash cloth on his face and head for a while.  I have also been nursing him.  I actually have to go out and get some aloe tonite and I can put it on him.  Like I said he seems happy I just worry about everything.  Last night DD was doing cartwheels on our hard basement floor and fell and had the darkest goose egg on her head.  I kept her up for 2 hours kept asking her questions and was scared to death to go to sleep myself.  Luckily you can't even tell today.  I just worry too much I can't help it.   Thanks though for the reply and for letting me know I am NOT stupid although I still feel that way.

Well I asked a Pharmasist about the sunburn and he said to use Solarcane or some burn spray and also to use Tylenol because they overheat just like having a fever.  Keep them under dressed and of course keep out of sun for a few days.  Now you all know if this happens to you.  Take it from me....USE SUNSCREEN EVEN IF IT IS CHILLY OUT AND YOUR BABY WILL BE IN THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!  Take Care

The pharmasist said it was the sun.  He has had Tylenol before so I know that is not it I thought about the Solarcane thing but he said he sees it all the time with babies in the summer that their faces swell til their eyes are almost shut because they are just to fair to take the sun.  He is eating and sleeping alright and right now he is playing with sissy and having a good time.  I asked if I should take him to a dr and the pharm. said they would probably not do anything except maybe Benadryl but he was not sure due to his age.  O well now I know.  Thanks again.  It has been great talking to ya!!!!

P.S.  Tell DH I said howdy.  LOL!!!!!!!!

I was reading about the baby sunburns and I also have let my baby get a little to pink.  But I found this really awesome product and thought I would share with the group. The product is called UV Skinz sun protective swimshirts and they are a MUST HAVE for any family. I own several shirts now and can not imagine life without them. I love these swimshirts. My one year baby girl LOVES to be outside, but I worry so much about her fair skin. Once I purchased a few UV Skinz shirts, I immediately felt more comfortable with her being outdoors under the sun. She loves them, they have super fun designs and they are breathable so she's not hot or sweaty. I have her wear them to the park, beach, lake, or just out and about. They are affordable and I feel you just can't afford to be without them. I give these shirts two thumbs WAY up!!!!

A little background on these shirts:
They carry a UPF rating of 50+, which blocks out over 98% of the sun’s harmful rays. UV Skinz are sun shirts that are not made with any chemicals or lotions.

Again...I love these shirts, the company, and their mission. Check them out...
