what is considered a long luteal phase

by stillwaiting, Jan 10, 2006 12:00AM
If you 'o' early in the month, will your luteal phase be considered abnormally long? What is too long? I got + opk this morning. CD 12. My cycle is a clockworthy 28 days. Would this be a problem that would cause my m/c's?

i believe the luteal phase is the same for you every month no matter when you o. you can go to fertilityfriend.com  they have a lot of helpful information.  and the luteal phase is suggested to be at least 12 by most drs.

Your story is bascially my exact situation when I got pg.  I got my + OPK around CD 9, something really early and I was extremely surprised, and I also had clockworthy 28-day cycles. I got pg that cycle and Tyler is now 15 months.  I don't believe this will cause you any harm whatsoever if you get pg.

I believe that if you got a + LH surge on cd 12 your cycle is normal as your surge occurs 24-48 hours before you actually O. So if your + was on cd 12 you could have Oed on cd 14.

A "normal" LP is anywhere from 10-16 days, though some DRs will say 12-16 days.  Your LP will not change by more than a day or 2 per cycle.  Most often, it won't change at all.  It doesn't matter when you O in your cycle as long as your LP is at least 10-12 days.  I've never heard of having an LP that is too long.

Oh my goodness, thanks yall. I had just read somewhere that a long luteal phase could cause loss. I didn't know if this was normal or not. I sure hope this is the month. I have been bding around cd14 or 15. I was all wrong. I was just sure with a reg 28 day cycle that was it. We bd last night and will again tonight. I hope it works. Yall I could just cry when I think about the fact that I could be again. If I have another loss I will be devastated. How can I be so mixed up? So anxious and yet so scared!

i was diagnosed with pcos and have been on metformin for about a year now. The good part of my story is that i have been able to detect my LH surge in the past 2months. However, my LP last cycle was exactly 14-15days, but this cycle is more than 18 days long and my Hpt's have been negative. My major concern now is that i may not be ovulating in as much as i have been detecting my LH surge. Can i be pregnant or just not alright?

I have been going throught the same thing!  I am on cd 38 (very late for me), o'd on cd 13 and am now on LP day 25.  I have had high temps and what appears to be a triphasic pattern, but Hpts are still coming back negative.  I went to a clinic on Mon, and after another negative test, the doc suggested that stress was possibly postponing AF. Please keep in mind that this doc could not answer many of my  questions because as she said, "This clinic is about prevention, not conception, so I don't know". I went home and read that stress can only postpone ovulation....not AF.  True?  Not sure, but it makes sense if your LP is always the same.  I called my regular ob/gyn yesterday and they said that they prefer for women to wait until they are a month late before coming in to find out if something is wrong.  She suggested that I continue to take Hpts until they are positive or AF comes.  Not sure if this info helps you at all, but I understand that it is very frustrating, and any info I have found has helped me to keep from worrying excessively.  Also wanted to let you know that you're not alone.  Good luck to you!
