I was just told on Monday (7/17) that I have marginal cord insertion and marginal placenta previa.  Neither the tech, nor my doctor (I saw her on 7/18) told me what this all meant except that it could potentially affect my "birthing options".  So I am at a loss like you.

If you find anything out, or your doctor talks to you, will you post here to let me know.

Thanks.

I was just diagnosed this this, too.  My Perinatologist seemed very concerned.  Have you rec'd any more information since you last posted?  I am pg with twins and only one of them has it.  My Peri seemed to suggest that this baby had a much greater chance of miscarriage or fetal problems.

hi,

am 21 weeks pregnant with twins and was diagnosed with this yesterday (only one of the twins has it). seems my perinatologist was a little more forthcoming with information on what this is and what it means. hope this info helps! the umbilical cord connects the baby to the placenta. when the cord connects to the placenta, it can connect in three ways: right in the middle "meaty" part (this is optimal), on the side (not as good), or on the membrane (can be dangerous). marginal cord insertion or "battledore insertion" means that the umbilical cord has connected with the placenta on the side, where it is not as large and "meaty." what this means for the baby is that this MAY limit the amount of nourishment that the baby receives from the placenta, which MIGHT affect his/her growth. as my perinatologist told me, please keep in mind that this only MIGHT affect your baby's growth...it is not a definite! the good news is this: marginal cord insertion is RARELY harmful if caught and monitored during pregnancy. you can find more information at this helpful site:

stay positive! like i said, only one of my twins has this condition...and she measured bigger than her brother (whose cord is normal) yesterday. good luck everyone :)

To: Hi
We were diagnosed with Marginal Cord Insertion very early in the pregnancy. We then saw a fetal specialist every 4 weeks to monitor the baby's progress. On the 28th week the checkup showed positive signs and that the baby was in the 55 percentile and still growing. We were comforted by this and calmed down quite a bit.

Unfortunately in between this and the next checkup (two weeks later) we lost our baby. We are still devastated to this moment as the doctors told us everything was on track and going to be fine. There were no signs leading up to this and it all happened so quickly. We thought the baby was still kicking up to the last moment, it turns out my wife was feeling contractions, not movements.

Don't want to scare you, but it is a reality that can happen, and did happen to us and we wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Regards,

Super Sad Dad.

I was diagnosed with marginal cord insertion at 34 weeks.  I was not getting big AT ALL, i looked like a normal 5 month pregnant woman at 8 months.  My doctor was a bit concerned so she had me see a specialist.  After a half hour of ultrasound they found the marginal insertion.  They also found that my daughter was not getting as much nourishment as they would like, she was 3 lbs 9 oz.  They were concerned and did an amnio, to see if her lungs were developed, so they could do a c-section.  Her lungs were not developed yet so I had to go in every other day for an ultrasound.  A week later I developed preclampsia and started having contractions.  We went in to the emergency room and we had our baby delivered via c-section a few hours later.  She was 3 lbs 14 oz at 36 weeks gestation.  She was completely developed, but just under nourished.  She is now 3 and a half months old, and 9 lbs.  She has no problems at all and is doing great, just looks a lot younger than she is.

To answer a question you may be having...I developed preclampsia out of nowhere, I am not over weight or big in any way...I am 5'3" and 120 lbs, completely healthy.  I think my daughter wanted out.  Once out she did very well, spent 10 days in the NICU.  Originally they thought she would be there for 4-6 weeks.

Don't let it scare you, but yes, there are risks.  Listen to your body.

Best of Luck,

Regan's Mommy
