2nd pregancy - fetal movement - how often

by mommamia8, Jul 17, 2006 12:00AM
Hi,

I was wondering for all those 2nd time moms, when did you feel the baby move?  I thought I had felt baby move 2weeks ago but the movements have definately not been consistent at all.  I didn't feel the baby move very much this past week.  Should I be worried?  I had a m/c before this pregancy so I'm very nervous when I think things are going wrong.  With a 2nd pregancy I thought I would feel more and earlier but it doesn't seem to be.  I know for my DS I definately had some harder movements around 19 weeks and now I'm almost at 18 weeks.  I even rented a doppler just so that I could relieve my anxiety and I'm pretty sure I here the baby's heartbeat.  Does anyone know if there is a max # of times you should be using a doppler before it becomes harmful for the baby?

hi, i only have one child, but with that pg, i rented a doppler even before my doctor could find the heartbeat and i used it about everyday unil about 2 weeks until i delivered.  My doctor said the doppler was perfectly safe to use and would not cause no harm to the baby and now i have a wonderful and beautiful 8 month old baby girl and pregnant again! Good luck...and no worries!

How old is your first child?--you may just be so busy with your life and so active that you are just not feeling the movement as you remembered with 1st.  My boys were 20 months apart and I remember the 2nd being much nicer to mom on the inside-he was a lot calmer and that is how he is now--still much more reserved than his brother.  If you are concerned go into the doctor and have the nurse see if they will do a stress test-(if you are far enough along--I think there is a certain develpment you have to reach) or just have the nurse monitor the heartbeat for you to give you peace of mind.--That is what they are there for.

The second time around makes it much easier to tell what you are feeling. I was feeling some flutters around the 11/12 week mark with my second and actually thought I was imagining it until I had an u/s done and the tech and I played a little game with it. Turns out, I was right.

But, that didn't mean they were consistent movements. Heck, I am pg with my third and 25 weeks and his movement it still inconsistent and his patterns are vastly different than the first two.

I agree that a doppler may put your mind at ease. Rather than renting one, I bought a great one for $115 (which included 3-day shipping and gel) from www.healthchecksystems.com Many ladies on here have gone on to purchase the same one and so far I haven't heard any complaints. It would all depend on how often you think you would use it and for how long, in the long run, it may make sense to rent one. I wish I would have had one with my first two! Seems silly to have waited until my last to buy one, but it was still well worth it.

Thanks everyone for your advice.  I definately am a lot more active this time around especially with a 3 yr old running around.  We were running around all last week so I didn't really have any time to sit down and relax so that could definately be a reason for not feeling movements.  So when I do have a chance to nap or put my feet up I thought I would feel more but it's not consistent at all.  I felt little pokes this morning while driving to work so I'm pretty sure everything is ok.  I'm just so paranoid and I love the first kicks!  It freaked me the other day when I couldn't find the h/b but the little guy/gal apprently moved to the other side of my tummy!

I was wondering since you brought up about renting a doppler. If you could suggest where you can rent one. I've actually been entertaining that idea for awhile thanks.

My dear, you will be kicking "yourself" in another 2 mths for wishing for those hard kicks (wink).  your little one will make itself known......and your most welcome, I am like you, a worry wart, but from what you have said.....everything sounds completely normal and most women dont even feel ANY fetal movement at all until 20 weeks......relax and just love that your little one is nestled in there all comfy (smile)

I wouldnt worry one little bit!  Hey, if this one is not kicking in screaming in the womb, maybe other mommy's will envy you that your little one is so well behaved during the terrible two's...lol, I think so much depends on your activity, whether its a boy or girl, or what you eat, not to mention every child is totally unique, born or unborn....try not to worry, just take care of yourself and yours (a wink and a smile).

My goodness, I know mine lately has taken to doing full body stretches, testing my lung capacity : ) I do still find myself grabbing the doppler if he has been quiet.

I'm from Canada so I rented mine from a vancouver company called 'dopplers to diapers'.  They have a website.  There are others located in Canada too, just do a search using 'rental dopplers + canada'.  I just found for myself, renting was a lot cheaper since I'm only going to be renting it for 3 months or so until I can really feel the baby kick.  The price for rental is comparable, there is about a couple of dollars difference between companies.  When I looked into buying it was in the range of $500 CDN which was way out of our budget.

Thanks for the kind words.  I guess when you've had 1 m/c it sucks but I find myself always worrying at the tinest things.  I just really want to feel those hard kicks so that I know forsure everything is going well.  I really should relax since even if something were to happen now nothing could be done anyway since I'm still only 18 weeks along. I'm just such an impatient worriwart!

Hi everyone, I am 17 weeks and 4 days with my third, i find out the sex of my baby next week, i have 2 beautiful boys and the first was so active i could literally feel a tornado in there, the second who is 23 months was so gentle and calm and i havent felt anything yet this time around. thanks for all the comments in here because i was starting to worry.. They say with each pregnancy it should be earlier than the last but i guess maybe its still to early, i wouldnt worry about it and ill try not to too! I liked what was said about how youll have a wonderful quiet child when the terrible twos comes along.. good luck.. hehheheh, sometimes that little halo needs polishing up!! hehe..  lets relax and see what happens!
