Nystastin and tramcinolone acetonide for pregnant women

by veronicapatrici, Sep 13, 2006 12:00AM
I am pregnant and I have a yeast infection. My ob gyn prescribed me a cream that has nystantin and triamcinolone acetonide. I was reading the patient information leaflet and I got nervous when I read this among the precautions paragraphs: "there are no teratogenic studies with combined nystantin and triamcinolone acetonide. Corticoisteroids are generally teratogenic in laboratory animals when administered systematically at relatively low dosage levels. The more potent corticosteroids have been shown to be teratogenic after dermal application in laboratory animals. Therefore, any topical corticosteroid preparation should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus". I have used it once but I don't know if it is safe for the fetus to continue using it. A yeast infection doesn't seem to be worth taking the risk of using something that hasn't been tested appropriately. I'm interested to know what your opinion is.

Most prescription medicines will tell you not to take while pregnant.  They have to.

Your doctor knows you are pregnant, right? Your doctor isn't going to prescribe something that is going to harm your baby.  More importantly what category drug is it? Is it B?  C?

If you don't feel comfortable taking the drug then call your doctor and discuss it with him/her.  Either your doctor will make your fears go away or tell you to stop taking it and prescribe something you feel better about taking.  But chances are almost every drug your doctor can prescribe, if not all, will warn against taking while pregnant.  Your approved over-the-counter drug list is full of drugs that all say, "Don't take while pregnant unless you consult your doctor first."  It's all liability and because drug companies usually don't do studies on pregnant women.  There are MANY safe drugs out there though.

Check out safefetus.com

I dont see why nystatin would be harmful to a fetus considering when newborns get thrush they are often given oral nystatin or miracle mouth wash which has nystatin in it.  Im sure if your Dr knows that you are pregnant he would not have given you a drug that would harm your baby, nor would the pharmacy if they know that you are pregnant.  You can always call you pharmacist and ask.

The drug is category B. And you are right, Nystastin is perfectly safe, but the other component is the one that worries me: tramcinolone acetonide. Thanks a lot for your answers.
