Chalazion Cyst

by apalmgren, Oct 29, 2006 12:00AM
My two year old son was diagnosed with a chalazion cyst. We were told to go to an Optamologist to have it removed. The problem is that we live in a small town and there are only two Optamologists in our area. They are so busy that we were placed on a waiting list. It has been over two weeks and still no appointment. We were told to administer a warm compress and a topical antibiotic. The cyst has not grown any larger, but now when we put the compress on it, small amounts of pus and blood come out and there is a scab on the area. We are using a clean washcloth every time and the antibiotic right after. Is this normal? Should I take him to the ER since the Optamologists can't fit him in to their schedual? Can the ER even perform this type of surgery?

You question is probably better for the Eye Forum, so try over there too.

My only suggestion is to call back to the opthamologists office and tell them there is now blood and pus coming from it.  If you call the office on a weekend, you should get a recording telling you how to leave a message for the doctor on call.  The on call doctor can tell you in minutes if this is anything to worry about or not.

Go to the Eye forum, and try to post your question there.

My son has had that on and off for the past 2 years and he is now 3.  Doing the warm compresses is the only 'natural' method to get rid of them.  The pus and blood is normal.  Once you squeeze all the pus out the swelling will go down.  You really want the pus to come out.  Use a clean q-tip and squeeze as much out as possible.  We went to an optimologist and they told us they couldn't do anything unless it really disturbs there vision so we can only do the warm compresses.  They told us some kids are just more prone to them then others.  Good luck!

To: Mamas with Chalazion afected children...
My four year old daughter has been plagued with chalazions since she was almost three years old. About 10 weeks ago, she got one that infected & freaked me out! It got so large that her eye almost closed completely. Her Doc put her on erythromycin & it cleared up, but then it began its SLOW decent down her eyelid. For about 6 weeks now, it has come to settle on her lash line. Her little two year old brother has accidentally popped it while playing her, on two occasions. I guess he did her a favor because it made drainage quicker. But now she has been left with a harder lump there & redness still. The doctor recommends to continue waiting & compresses & massages, but she's tired of all this. Can anyone out there help?
